Thinking about camping out at my ranch later in the week for a few days :D Just wondering where all you knifeolics went in order to get more acquainted with mother nature.

Well, not at a ranch that's for sure. I don't think the landowner would appreciate that lol. I use public lands to camp.

Mostly along rivers and major creeks and streams where riparian rights provide for legal public access, regardless of adjacent land ownership. Camping on your own land would be great though. Over the years I have come to abhore established campgrounds, such as in State and National parks and commercial ventures, and all or the riff raff that do frequent them, using trees and sky as excuses for behaving badly. Not that I never did that myself but I guess I am beyond my behaving badly years.

I usually head to one of the cities surrounding mountains - as fast as a 20 min drive or the 2 1/2 hour crawl (the roads are pretty rough).

EDIT: Was thinking "day hiking" - not camping....

For "camping" i pretty much head out to the 2 1/2 hour area - and hike another 2 hours off-road. That gets me up on a mountain overlooking a beautiful valley. There are other similar places, but the one i'm thinking of is my "main" go-to area.

In the summer we hit an area near Mt. Hood usually. We found a nice little spot for car camping that's mostly private. In the winter we hit the campgrounds on the beach because they're a ghost town this time of year. Looking to get into more backpacking this year though.

I go up on the Mogollon Rim here in Arizona and sometimes up by Sedona. I ALWAYS go somewhere where you need to hike in to get there and stay away from the fools. I go with a few semi oldtimers. In the summer I go to the Olympic National Park (where I'm from) in Washington and do some more strenuous hiking and flyfishing. Occasionally I'll hit some good fishing spots in Utah on the way there. Man where's my backpack? I'm ready to go today.

Here are a few shots of my favorite spots in Nebraska and Wyoming.

Wow rocketbomb I would love to go there one day! Seems like I'm lucky that my ranch is about 20-30 minutes away from me lol and there ain't any "fools" to go and mess everything up!

There are good places to camp nearly everywhere, long as you can get a little ways from the crowds and campgrounds. Wish we had a good spot here on the farm to camp.

Whenever it is an overnighter, I tend to just go in the woods behind my house, since I like to be able to get to work if I am needed. Often times when work is out, I have a few other people call me for side jobs. If I know nothing like that will happen, I will go a few hours away to Southern Ohio. I know quite a few people down there that would let me stay on their property. (Most of them own 400+ acres)

Yeah I head out back too. Even if it's only for an hour you can really put your mind back in it's proper place with a little nature. Just started a small campsite with a firepit and the lean-to that hasn't been put up yet. It's at the bottom of a hollow with super thick woods and a bunch of paper company land adjoining. Deer, coyotes, snakes, ticks and chiggers.

Anywhere I want within Idaho, and a few spots in Oregon, Nevada and Washington. Public land, NF and National Wilderness Areas can really kick butt. Options are really endless around here.
