Where do you guys get your sticks?

Hey All...

I need several pairs of new Escrima sticks- manau rattan, 28" long- fighting weight and training weight.

I usually buy 8' lengths of manau rattan and make them myself, but I have been so busy with work lately that I just haven't had time. So where is the cheapest place to get top quality rattan sticks?

TIA,

Mario

Hey Gaucho, I agree with K. Williams, Kombat Instruments has the best sticks that I've ever gotten. If you speak with Nick he'll even look for the specific type of stick you're interested in (fat and heavy, many nodes, etc.).

Liked the link. But I'm still curious, where would a guy get the 8' lengths of rattan to make his own?

Thanks,
Steve

i agree 100% with Kelvin- he knows this stuff inside out backwards and forwards and any other way you can think of...hopefully we can get him to post that long list of FMA gear (drool, drool...)..
Kombat Instruments (KIL) are top top notch for their sticks. i don't know if anybody mentioned it but when you talk to Nick (the owner of the company who makes and hardens the sticks), just know this-
you're talking to a tried and true member of the Dog Brothers...he makes it very clear that he won't sell anything that he wouldn't use under the conditions that he fights in.... now, i PRAY that i never have to fight in any circumstance similar to what he does just for fun...but you will be sure that you're getting the best.
my pair (i have a nice kamagong from Kris Cutlery for fun but i like to stick with rattan) are 1" thick, standard length. damn strong; trust me, you won't go wrong....

Thanks you guys! I guess Kombat Instruments is the way to go. I'll give them a call in the morning.

Steve, Kelvin beat me to it. I get my raw rattan poles from Bamboo and Rattan Works.

Peace and good training to each of you.

KELT,

My explanation for how I was able to compile such a cool listing of FMA related supplies is that I spend too much time online!

The raw rattan from Bamboo & Rattan works is is Manau rattan, which is supposed to be the strongest currently available rattan. Whether manau is the best rattan in the world or not, I couldn't tell you. You'd have to ask someone with more knowledge on rattan. They sell the rattan in 8' poles or you can get them precut to your dimensions. I think the precut sticks are the best way to go because they select straight sticks for you. The poles might not be straight. I used Guro Jeff Finder's instructions to harden them. Unfortunately, his old website that had the instructions is no longer available.

Stuart,

I didn't know that I could select a what type of rattan stick(s) I want from KIL! All his sticks last a LONG time, but the first two pairs that I bought from him seem to be indestructable. One pair is 31" X 1 1/4", the other is 28" X 1 3/8". The 28" pair hasn't frayed at all. I had to stop using them at the school because they were destroying everyone's sticks. Now I use them for strength training(they are very dense & heavy compared to other rattan sticks). Now I'll ask for very dense rattan when I order from Nick again.

I love KIL's logo and accronym as much as I do their sticks. Oh ... and let's not forget their motto "don't cleave bone without it" .... ha ha ha ha ha (maniacally twisted laugh)

Dave.

P.S. Time for another dose of my medicine.

Well, I ordered several pairs of sticks from KIL in different diameters. Hopefully they'll get here soon because I'm down to one useable pair of fighting sticks and one pair of thicker training sticks! How could I have let this happen?!

I'll let you guys know what I think when they arrive.

Thanks again,

Mario

Mario, drop me an e-mail and I'll hook you up with the guy who makes all my sticks. He's VERY good! And fairly inexpensive.
