I have been looking for a place to go plinking, but I don't own enough land, I don't think most parks allow guns unless they have hunting and as far as I know you can't plink in hunting areas.

So where do you guys shoot?

I live out in the sticks enough that I can bounce cans around out behind my house. My neighbors tend to do the same.

In the Los Padres National Forest they have a "designated shooting area"
There used to be two, but they shut one down because it caused a fire from a ricochet, allegedly

You can shoot legally in ANY National FOREST===>
  • No discharging of a firearm within 150 yards of a dwelling or other building, campground, recreation site or other occupied area.
  • No discharging of a firearm on or across a National Forest System Road or a body of water adjacent thereto, or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge.
  • Hunting on private land requires permission from the landowner.
  • All Federal, State and local laws apply to hunters on Federal land.

It's strange. I live in Alaska and have to drive about a half hour to do any amount of shooting. I used to shoot at an old Nikey/Herc sight in the area, but it got too crowded. I've since found a secret shooting spot with all the yardage I could ever want. It's only shared with my father and my closest friend. (I've offered to take others shooting there, but they refused to wear a blindfold and ride in the trunk of my car):D

airguns- 6 miles east of us at the bypass.

firearms.... I wish I could find a spot.

I either go to an old gravel pit (don't know who owns it but everyone in the area goes and shoots there, so I don't ask questions) or theres a public range not too far from me. If time is tight or I want to go rapid fire without going to the gravel pit, I'll hit an indoor range at one of the gun stores near me. I love when I'm staying at my grandparents, I can just shoot right of the back porch. They've got 80 acres and its all commercial forest and farm land all around them.

Right at home - save gas and time.

For airguns, I build pellet traps out of 2x4s, plywood and plumber's putty. Hang a pop can or a piece of metal and you have a great audible target. Tape a paper target over it to get sighted in. Hang a balloon and you have the challenge of an ever decreasing target. I can shoot in my basement or in the back yard. I shoot a Crosman 1377 with custom walnut grips (www.RBGrips.net). Sometimes I put on the take down stock and mount a cheap Daisy scope.

Archery, in back yard, Morrells Yellow Jacket and a broadhead cube.

Slingshots - I make a target box out of a cardboard box with a scrap piece of carpet inside. This stops the steel shot so you can recover it and shoot it again. I shoot a Trumark FS1 and a custom ergo that I won over at the slingshot forum http://talk.slingshots.com/forums/index.php

I'm thinking about a blowgun next.

Member of a sportsman club. I live in the "suburbs" but the club is only 4 miles away - has indoor archery, 3D archery, trap/skeet, pistol to 100 yards, blackpowder range and rifle range to 600 yards. They only allow 1000 members which means you have to wait for someone to die or stop paying dues in order to have a chance to become a member. Here's the best part - the yearly dues are a whopping $90.

I've heard of it, but I didn't realize it had as much to offer as it does. Its probably a 45 minute drive for me in regular traffic to ypsi, but I might look into it. I assume there is some sort of waiting list I could put my name on?
