Where do you keep your blades?

Hi all!

I was wondering where do you all keep your blades for quick reach inside your house when things go bump in the night or other unexpected situations where a big blade would be needed? Bedside, kitchen, restoom...:barf: :D

I keep a loaded 9mm Beretta 92 next to my side of the bed with this 21.5" Chitlangi by kami Sher:

Right here by the computer I have a loaded Ruger Bisley-Vaquero .44mag and my CS War Hammer.

In the other bathroom I have a Tramontina Panga pattern machete I bought in 1987.

In the living room I have a loaded FN Browning Hi-Power 9mm in the cabinet above the TV.

Back in my 'workshop' room I have a loaded Mossberg Persuader 12 gauge, and most of my extensive collection of tomahawks, swords, knives, war clubs, and other assorted nasty goodies.

Two canine alarm systems; one is a 70 lb Belgian Groenendael/Collie mix and the other is a 110 lb German Shepherd/Norwegian Elkhound mix.

I think we'll be safe.

I used to keep a fast chitlangi in a hidden spot under the headboard. One night something did go bump, and again, and again at random times. Freaked me out, especially 'cause I couldn't find my glasses. Pulled the chitlangi and went skulking to see if I could determine source of the noise without the ability to see it. Adrenaline pumping. Hairs raised on the back of my neck. All the senses at the ready...only to find one of the kid's mylar balloons had come loose from its mooring and been caught up in the ceiling fan, which explained the randomness of the rattling/bumping noises.

Now that my kids are a little older and more curious and inventive, I keep the blades up high and hidden in my closet, and glasses close to my bed! I know, I should have felt the force flowing through me, but in a pinch, I really wanted the ability to see better in the dark.

I have a few knives, but for things that go bump in the night I have a decent sized club within easy reach, the manufacturers even thought to incorporate a flashlight into the design of the club. It is called the Maglite 6D. I am not too sure that swinging a knife capable of taking someones head off is a good idea in the middle of the night when I am half asleep. Of course smacking someone in the head with a Mag 6D is probably not a good idea unless you are really sure that they are an intruder.

No kids here. Honestly, I keep them ALL OVER. Drawers, chests, on my desk and not because I need one within hands reach (and they are) but because I only have so much room!

Well, AlexGT, first to answer your question: I have a couple of large kukris by my nightstand and in my car always at a convenient reach.

The rest is just a rant.

Many people on this forum will scare the world if they say exactly how paranoid they are and how it affects their lives even in the safest cities of the world. I, for one, just went to the gym at 8pm with a taser gun, a mace, and a 6" blade concealed, not to mention the years of training in multiple martial arts, all 6'4" of me and 210 lbs. of mostly muscle.

Then why are we all acting like we are a 5'2" petite girl with no ability to defend herself from evil and sleeping with instruments of death under our pillows (metaphorically or literally)?

Good question and everyone has a different answer based on their experiences. I grew up in a dangerous country and then worked as private security for a few years. I know exactly how terribly malicious human nature can be and refuse to be a victim (again) and will be suitably prepared even if 99.9999% of the time it looks like complete and utter overkill. I can't own or even rent a gun because I am not an US citizen (yet), but I used to shoot a lot competitively and as a hobby in my country, and if I could, I would own many guns here too (at least a glock 10mm and a large bore magnum revolver such as a .44 if not a .460, along with a 9mm Kel-Tec or Kahr Arms for EDC). This said, I lean to the left on all other social issues, but as far as the NRA goes, I am 110% right-wing to the bone.

It is really sad that even in this century and in developed countries, humanity hasn't progressed enough to remove violence from its dictionary. In my opinion, as long as cholesterol gets converted into testosterone in our bodies, we will always have to use artificial social constructs to constrain our baser instincts. Until then: I am packing heat.

Not to mention that it relaxes me greatly and brings me great enjoyment to "play with" weapons. Why? I have no clue, it is perhaps genetically programmed for survivial, or a product of my childhood with the movies of Arnie, Sly, and the two Bruce's, or a remnant of a past life if you believe in reincarnation (I am agnostic). After all, why do children play war and fight from the earliest age, and other evolved mammals do so too? Either way, I like big knives and I cannot lie...(sorry for that)

Alex

P.S. It could be worse, check out this "great new product": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRRxZ9bVZ4c

P.S.2 This is where I keep the weapons I don't use:

Holly smokes! That is a good boy-scout camp story. Whatever you do, don't watch the movie "Paranormal Activity" it will freak you out again in the same way. The night will never be the same again.

On my night stand, couple of kurkri's, tomahawk, and a 12 in dagger, my kobra and a ball headed warclub in the corner by the bookcase, a 24in shortsword under the bed. My girl has a mace by the bed, a kurkri, baselard, and artillery short sword on the dresser and two katanas on the wall. The rest of the house has a scattering of weapons everywhere, but it has little to do with bumps in the night we're just both collectors.

This 5'3 gal walks out the door with nothing but a pocket knife, flashlight, and house keys. Took a khukuri out last wednesday only because the neighborhood was buried underneath in snow and ice..

Slept with an 23 inch long kindjal only once in my life at the age of ten for a couple of years on the side of the bed. Someone was after my family. :(

Won't make fun of what a person on this board and many others considers adequate self defense needs, but its very amusing to me that a big guy carries all that when the average gal walks out the door every day with nothing more dangerous than a pair of tweezers and her house keys.

Why do people do that? Maybe they read the news too much or they had really bad experiences that they want to prevent from happening ever again who knows. The biggest threat to my existence is fast moving cars next to my street going into the highway. Some of them don't follow traffic laws!

In '87 I was held up at gunpoint and robbed while working at a convenience store (part-time college job).
Back in '95 someone tried to break in the door of our apartment, impersonating a police officer. Stated his daughter lived in our apartment and was looking for her.

Sadly, I don't trust the capacity of humanity's penchant for violence.

I keep a new Bura 18" Sirupate by my bed. Sharpest knife I own.
Trigger-locked .38-special is useless in our closet on the highest shelf. My wife refuses to let me keep it loaded. We have two children - ages 11 and 13. She doesn't ask about the khuk anymore. Probably accepted the fact that being armed with 1.5 pounds of razor-sharp Nepal steel is better than nothing in case of a break-in.

Of course, if someone assaults us with a handgun, we're screwed. Outside of that, they're losing a body part.

Same here. The blades closest to my bed are a kuku macan and a jambiya, with a number of swords from HI and other folk stacked in a corner a little further way. But again it's not really 'cause I'm afraid of break-ins or anything, more that I'm strapped for storage... and let's face it, I'm a poor organizer. :(

Google is such a good friend. Learned what a kuku macan is. Never answered the poster's question. All over the bedroom.

I keep the m43, on the little "table" that's part of my coat & hat rack. The Bura Salyan is on top of a livig-room bookcase. My R6 and Rusty SD are currently on my computer desk, and the antique I now own (post & pictures later), is now resting in my laundry basket until I find a place for it, on top of some freshly-cleaned flannel bedsheets.

Currently, my old Rennie sidesword and several large walking sticks have the bedroom

I keep numerous folders either on top of my dresser with more folders and several fixed blades in the top drawer. I keep my Rat RC-4 in the drawer of my nightstand. But when things go bump in the night, i reach for my Mossberg 590 or Glock 23.

Not knowing what you are facing, I would not want to under estimate the source of bumping.

I keep blades all over.... and could find one within seconds if I needed one.

But if I thought something was in the house. I would grab one of several 12 gauges near the bed. Because taking someone in half looks worse than 9 pellets of 00 buck...... stupid media making every one out to be crazies.

My gunsafe and blade storage rack built on top of the gunsafe are mounted in a corner of my bedroom closet. It always seemed to make sense to keep it there. If there were the odd break in, into my house all of my beloved toys are with me, not the other guy breaking into my place.
Bedside, Kimber 1911 and Fenix TK-11 for bump in the night.

I'll never tell.

Seriously, I don't rely on a bladed weapon as a first line of self defense. I have a Mossberg 590, Ruger GP100, Taurus Judge, and Charter Arms Bulldog .44 for that. That said, I have a couple of blades handy, just in case.

In my Bedroom,
10 Axes hanging on the wall, 5 kukris, and a Bow...not anything really useful in a gun fight....but, I hope thats never a reality.
I grew up with an interest in all things combat, and thats just the way it is.
As far as why people should prepare for the worst and hope for the best...because that fact remains...bad stuff happens.
One of my friends was murdered 5 years ago, in her home...and my brothers girlfriend was attacked last year, by a rapist. The only thing that saved her was her tenacity and the fact that my bro made her carry mace...which she emptied in the assailents face....needless to say, it was a horrifying experience.
To think that it cant happen to you...is ...naive.

I walk out the door with a big blade because I live out in the woods and I never know if I'll need a blade large enough to hack through briers, multiflora rose, fallen trees, etc.

It's only a secondary weapon if called into that role. My first response to an attack will be whatever pistol I happen to be carrying, or my AR15 if I happen to be out varmint huntin'.

Out on the town though, I usually just carry my Cold Steel Master Tanto or beloved Camillus "KaBar" horizontal at the small of my back. Why? Because I am my wife's bodyguard.

Wow, these are two sobering stories among so many others; it makes you sick to your gut! Great job to your bro's girl for surviving when many others would have frozen, and I hope that any emotional scars have healed too. I also gave Mace to my ex-girlfriend and she carries it everywhere now in her pocket and I often ask her to show me how quickly she could get to it if need be. It's not much, but it just might give you that precious second or two to get the heck out of Dodge. If I have chidren one day, I hope they are boys or I will be freaking out every time my "little girl" is out late. Not that boys are safe, but this world is especially cruel to women and children.

By the way, I recently saw the movie "Zombieland" and Rule #1 of surviving zombies is "cardio." The best defense may be offense, but take your ego out of the equation, and running and screaming at the top of your lungs will save your life 9 times out of 10. Even if you are guy, however demeaning running might be, at least you won't have to kill the mofo that messes with you blinded by adrenalin and testosterone. Good luck proving self defense when they find him with a trachea punched in, bite marks on the jugular, and eyes scratched out of their sockets (which is my first instinct in a fight for better or worse; clean fighting is overrated outside the octagon).
