Years ago i used to collect benchmade knives, then i moved on to sebenza collecting, now im on to strider. Today i found a bencmade gold class im in love with thenew carbon fiber 525-81 mini presidio. Its 500.00. Does benchmade have the collectabilty of chris reeve or strider. 500.00 seems a little high to me.

You will get your money out of a Strider or CRK , or nearly so . I very much doubt that the Gold class offerings would give you that kind of retained value . They are nice , but that's crackpipe pricing !

I have to agree that the $500 pricetag is high - it sounds like MSRP plus some to me. I've seen Gold Class mini-Skirmishes for in the $300 plus range.

As far as collectibility, I think that Gold Class will retain more value and command a higher price than either the CR or the Strider, simply because it's a limited edition. While their regular Black and Blue Class line may not command the prices of CR and Strider, Benchmade is still an upper-class knifemaker. Their quality shows.

as for collecting very expensive knives: maybe you should diversify. Maybe 15-20 years down the road when you want/need to sell some of those knives you wouldn't be able to unload 30 knives from only one maker as easily as you could sell 10 or 15 from a couple different makers. Not saying from experience just a thought.

As far as benchmades, I love them.

I'd rate the upper Benchmade just like the customs from Buck. Collectibility won't be widespread or highly popular, two benchmarks that push older knives into high demand when the original target market becomes old enough to blow money on recapturing their youth.

$500? No way - not until minimum wage hits $18.35 an hour.

it seems tome that gold class BMs get a stiff price increase down the road... That Gold Class Presidio is incredible. I've owned enough Sebenzas and Strider folders to make a sane man puke.... They ARE great knives, but I consider Benchmades and Spydercos a better "using" value... If I were James Bond I would certainly opt to EDC an SnG or Seb, but since I've come to my senses, I find a nice Spydie or USA made Benchmade to be the ideal EDC.

To answer your question, yes, I consider Blue, Black and Gold class Benchmades to be great collector pieces... "collector" being total safe queens and being in the "collector's" possession for many years. CRKs and Striders will hold their value better in the short run, but I'd bet if the three companies stay in business for 20 years the overall value would be similar.

sprint runs, first production runs, gold class models, even some discontinued models have great collectibility. the day Benchmade Skirmishes were announced to be discontinued they jumped 30%
