We know al the fancy therms for different kinds of knife steel, but were do they stand for?
I recently got my Spyderco Manix 2 carpenter cts-bd30p steel. But have no idea what it meens.

CTS is the company. Carpenter Technology(they bought Latrobe)
BD30P is the alloy name. I'm not possitive, but I've read it's similar to S30V with the addition of a few trace elements and maybe a little higher vanadium. Again, that knowledge is all second hand.

It doesn't necessarily have a meaning that the end user can relate to. For all intents and purposes, that is the name of the steel. As NTS mentioned, it is indeed very simlar to S30V

Tks, neuron. Well, perhaps we can all get some BG-42 again. :)
As it happens, the CTS-BD30P Manix 2 sprint that prompted this thread was originally supposed to use CTS-B75P, which is Carpenter's powder metallurgy version of BG-42. But due to a mix-up at Carpenter, what Spyderco received was BD30P instead of the B75P that they ordered: Sal has said that they only realized the steel was mislabeled when they went to heat treat the stuff. Obviously, they decided to go ahead and make the sprint with the BD30P they were sent, but I'm sure we'll see a sprint in B75P sometime as well. :)

I'm so glad they made that mistake. The coarse g10 and bd30p makes a killer combo!

Bd30p holds a working edge forever and resists chipping better than any s30v I've used before.

Double thumbs up in my book.

I thought Latrobe bought Crucible.. So, who owns crucible now?

Latrobe is still doing the CPM stuff, they are just owned by Carpenter. Niagra Specialty Metals(Akron, NY) also produces some of the CPM alloys. Some times it's cool to live in NY. :D

So who owns the Crucible? Just curious...

Neuron, thanks for pointing out CTS-B75 being an analog for the BG-42, merged them in steell chart.
BTW< for some reason Carpenter no longer lists CTS-B75P on their site. Neither in open, nor in registered user searches... Strange.

You're right. Crucible reformed in '09 after a bankruptcy, but I haven't heard of an acquisition since then. maybe Mete will be along sometime...
