Thanks, this is good advise!
However, I was looking for different kind of source - free one Like in the Home Depot you can find cheap or free cuts of woods, but they are plain. What about some furniture factories or alike? We need small cuts, right?
You might try finding a custom cabinet maker in your area. He might have some scraps that he cannot use for anything else, but which are big enough for knife scales.
I live in Naperville, IL, and I can give you a couple of small pieces of Osage Orange suitable for knife scales if you like. You can stop by, or I'll mail them to you.
Is it the old Imperial hunting knife, with the ugly reddish plastic handle with an elk on it? If so, that handle would be fairly straightforward to replace, and the osage orange would be good. (That osage orange is good stuff.)
If you're talking about the old Imperial pocket knives with the thick plastic foil over the metal handle, those pretty much aren't replaceable without destroying the knife. I see them all the time in antique shops here, missing the plastic foil.
