Greetings, I am trying to replace my old cold steel junior stockman or the Old timer 3-1/4" stockman and am having trouble. I see lots of stainless stockmans, but i want a real knife with carbon steel blades. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd say great eastern cutlery. They use either 1095 or 440c. Queen and canal street tend to use d2 which is more of a semi stainless.

Search around the bay for another Old Timer.

I picked up a 3.25 case cv at my local feed store. Red bone scales. They had a pile of them in the display.

Get a Case Large Stockman or whatever size you want in CV steel, great price, cuts like a Razor, looks great and is well a Case.

I traded for a Schrade Old Timer 1080T Junior at a small gunshow today. I see a few NY stamped Schrades at nearly every gunshow around here.

You should have no trouble finding another original Old Timer in carbon steel. The small stockman knives were quite common and aren't premium-priced like many Old Timer models.

Sorry, but I disagrees with the Case suggestions. Their quality is so hit-or-miss that I cannot recommend them sight unseen. And someone accustomed to Schrade's 1095 carbon steel probably isn't going to be happy with Case's CV, and certainly not their stainless.

Boker has a nice selection of models in carbon steel. Might look at some of those. Much higher level of fit-and-finish than Case, for about the same price.

I wonder if Canal Street has any small stockman patterns, or much in carbon steel? Their quality recently is excellent. I'd be happy with their D2 or other above-average steel choices.

Queen's D2 is nice also. Of course it won't patina like 1095, but the usability is excellent. Most of their smaller knives tend to be "QueenSteel," a lower-end stainless.

If the price doesn't scare you off, there's no one making a higher quality knife than Great Eastern right now. I'm almost certain they don't have a small stockman though. Check out the White Owl and Pony Jack for GEC pocketknives that aren't heavy or bulky.

Kabar makes a nice stockman pattern with D2 steel. Looked at one today. I was eyeing up a larger trapper, but they had a stockman lying right beside it. The Trapper was high quality. Price is not cheap however if you're used to $50 folders.

Since you seem to be interested in a medium stockman, besides the obvious Case, you can get good carbon steel medium (3.5") stockmans from Böker and Eye Brand. If your budget can handle it, a step up in quality would be any of the Great Eastern 66 Calf Roper or 68 Buckaroo options, both are good 3.5" medium stockman patterns. Here is my 68 Buckaroo:

Of course, you can always look on the 'bay for an older Old Timer with carbon steel. There are a lot of them out there.

Greetings and Merry Christmas, I have found an affordable alternative to the Old Timer Stockman-It is the Bear and Sons yellow handle 1095 blades C-318-Just bought one for $22.00 great

German Eye. I´ve got a carbon steel 4 1/4 stockman and it´s a really wonderful workhorse.
Hope it helps.

You should probably check out this sub forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/773-Traditional-Folders-and-Fixed-Blades

Anyways, I love a good Case 6375 in CV (Large Stockman). I like the mediums too. But it's probably best to examine before you buy. I've gotten really good Case knives and some I've sent back to Case for rework.

GEC as the 81 Abilene and the 66 and 68 pattern stockmen.... You'd probably like one of those.

You could find a good old USA Schrade on the big auction site.
