looking for olive drab and black, preferably. inexpensive yet real 550 cord, not some imitation. 50'-100' lengths, preferably a spool if the price is right.
im canadian, so a canadian source would be more convenient for me - or at least a place that ships to canada.

cheers,

thanks, but i guess ill have to wait until i visit richmond, VA in october:

its $19 to ship $13 worth of paracord to canada with the cheapest carrier - standard parcel post.
then when i get it ill have to pay duties and taxes on the whole number ($32+$5-10, then 15% tax on the whole thing), which will work out to roughly: $45-48. add in the exchange rate: $56-60 CAN to order two spools of $6 paracord.

this is why i absolutely loathe living in canada. :grumpy:

thanks,
their prices seem very good, i just emailed them and asked for a quote for shipping to canada. i ordered 100' of every color, including the orange.

cheers,

i emailed them yesterday for a quote, but they never responded. they dont have a proper online checkout system, you basically add product numbers to an email form and mail them for a quote.
their prices are kindof rediculous though.. i think it was $15.99 for 100' of para cord. its sold in the US for $4.99-6.00. so even with the exchange rate factored in, its well over double the price.

i dont understand why canadian prices are so unreasonable. i was looking at a CRKT M-16 the other day, they wanted $119.99 for it (and no, not a titanium one - it was plain aluminum handled). i nearly fell out of my chair. with sales tax added in, thats just under $140. this is a knife you can buy in the states for around $30. its absolutely #%@$ing rediculous.

my main motivation to just pick up and move to the US remains the fact that we make less money here, pay more income tax, pay 15% sales tax on everything we buy, and usually end up having to pay over 3x as much for consumer goods as americans. what do we get for this? free health care, but they are constantly limiting what it applies to and talking about cutting it back. they just passed a law allowing private health care clinics as well, so im sure that will further reduce the quality of healthcare for the average working joe.

Yup - hear you on that one. I was talking with Pauline at Knifezone not that long ago and she mentioned that it was tough to compete against the U.S. pricing because of the way the Can. distribution channel works. The retailers here, I think have to go thru a Can. distributor (another line of mark up  - having worked in retail for more than a few years, distributors I think make the bucks - sure wasn't from the retailer's side and definitely not for the customer) before getting to the retailers. I think that the US retailers can order direct from the manufacturer, volumes permitting. It also seems to take a while for new models to get up here. I was actually pretty surprised to see Spyderco's Byrd line in Calgary a couple of weeks ago - my friend bought a Meadowlark, but it was the demo (I ended up buying the Buck/Strider 887SBT Police Advocate :D ). Meadowlark, if I remember was around $50 which is about the U.S. list converted. I'm also seeing some huge discrepancies on similar models between retailers here. Maybe inventory from when our dollar went crazy. One of the retailers in Calgary has the Kershaw Bump at $399  that sure doesn't sound like $135 US!!! Same retailer, has an FRN Delica at about $80, which is not all that bad. I bought a BM Mini-Grip 556 in PE there for $120'ish and another retailer in Calgary had it for $149, but it was a CE. With shipping/taxes I got my BM550 from Pauline for less than that!! My Mini-grip was, in reality, REALLY expensive - I got one seized a few months ago bringing it across the border. A Buck Northshore was with that shipment as well. My collecting has slowed down because of this as well - there only so much money and you have to make the most of it. I'm only getting the stuff that I really want and just trying to find the best price I can. If I'm not in a hurry and know what I'm getting, I'll order online, otherwise, I'm buying local.

Paracord is definitely a pet peeve as well - Seals Action Gear is right here in Calgary, but I haven't had a chance to get down there, so can't comment on the availability of various colors.

\my rant off

If you catch the folks at LeBaron's in a good mood they have good prices on American Knives and will order in special choices.

Does it have to be Paracord? I got sick of looking for it too and not knowing if it was legit. ebay people tend to rip you off for Int postage so I just bought a simialr size climbing cord and trust the strength rating.

If you want knives I might be able to help. I send stuff abroad in Birthday paper and scruffy packages to make it look like a gift, no problems so far. ;)

Exactly how I feel.

heh, im always bitching about canadian computer component prices (im a 3D modeler, but i also sideline in onsite comp support and do a lot of upgrades/replacing parts) and how something that costs $100 in the states will end up costing $300+15% tax in canada. its absurd... especially considering i used to live in Windsor, Ontario - across the street from the border. i could see people in detroit walking around from my window, but for some reason to travel across a river prices increased threefold.

not only are prices high, but it is difficult to find canadian websites. i wouldnt mind paying MSRP, but canadian prices are usually double the US MSRP at a minimum. since knife shopping in canada is such a nightmare, perhaps we canucks should start a thread specifically geared for Canadian shoppers looking for knives, paracord, etc. whenever someone spots a great deal on a canadian site, we could post it for the others. same goes for if they find a US site with reasonable shipping and smooth transactions.

as for ordering from the US - try New Graham knives. i just ordered another CRKT Kasper folder, an M21-04 and a Benchmade 140HS from them, got it much, much cheaper than i would have in Canada. in fact i got all 3 for less than i would have paid for just the BM here. i spoke to them on the phone because i was worried about shipping, and theyre really nice people. the guy (forget his name) discussed shipping issues with me and seemed like he was pretty experienced with shipping to Canada. he shipped them global express (was pretty cheap), and labeled them as 'tools'. customs didnt even touch the package, i didnt pay any duties or taxes on it.
in case customs *did* open the package, however, he volunteered to torque down all of the pivot bolts on the folders - since if the knife can be flipped open one-handed then a customs official could confiscate it (which is totally retarded - you could theoretically confiscate ANY folder this way. im sure a lot of customs officials have really nice knife collections due to this). they arrived a couple of days ago, and two knives i ordered from swords.ca the day before i ordered from nnew graham *still* havent arrived yet - so they ship fast. i think it was 3 days total to get to me from virginia.

check them out - and give them a phone call if you have any questions or want them to do something like torque down the pivot screws (althouggh i get a feeling that this could be standard practice for them).

as for paracord - i just got a phonecall from sealsactiongear.com, and they quoted shipping as something like $9. so $15.99 for 100' of paracord, and $9 to ship, then 15% on top of everything is a little insane. i told them i wasnt going to order on the phone right then, i was still shopping around, and to please send me an email with the quote and if i dont find a better price ill order online. they never sent the email. their loss.
ill pick some up in october when im in VA.

Try here www.tripleaughtdesign.com real paracord (milspec) and many colors to choose from. 100 ft. lengths. Shipping isn't bad either.

actually that isnt 'real' 550 paracord, and their pprices arent so great either... $6.99 for 400lb 4 strand cord.

check out http://www.countycomm.com/550cord.htm - if you are in the US this seems like the absolute best deal. $6 for 100ft lengths, and its the 550lb 7-strand mil spec stuff. they have it in black, tan, OD and international orange. their shipping also seems very reasonable (if youre in the US).

im not nitpicking :) for wrapping knife handles and creating lanyards and things im sure you would never notice the difference between the two. but for survival gear you might as well get the real stuff - and besides, its cheaper by a buck.

cheers,
-gabriel

For me, I would most likely use paracord for lanyards, so I've been using other materials. I also do leatherwork, so I've been using some leather lacing material. It's a lot more expensive this way, but it's handier. I got some fairly light cord'ish material from a bead shop. It was waxed and it works pretty well, as well. Took a bit of work to get that wax off, but it was pretty good for my smaller folders.

funny how life twists and turns quite suddenly sometimes..
i was just saying that i wish i lived in the US, and it seems that after some unrelated events today i *will* be pulling up anchor and moving to the states very soon.
so im going to put my purchase plans on hold, im sure i can get things a lot cheaper in texas :)
and ill actually be able to carry them.

FYI

Make sure its truely 7 twisted inner strand cord as there is officially other paracords in use by the military with only 5 inner strands ;) .

TO think we wasted spools of the stuff while in the military not thinking of its value and rarity upon leaving. Should of relieved the taxpayers of several spools before retirement.

SKam

Check ebay watch out for 'fakes'. I got a spool for $53 shipped, and someone else there offered to pricematch at $50 shipped for a spool. 7 strand, 550lb, new spool of black.
