Yeah, I used to run a multi location business and was on call 24 7. It sucked!
If I was running a knife business, you can bet I'd be closed for the holidays! Pride of ownership?!? Yeah, but pride in a personal life should be higher priority!
I love working freelance doing still photos in the News Biz, it gave me opportunities to travel to place most people never go, it gave me the opportunity to meet people most will never get to meet, it was a wonderful life, and I would still be doing it. Had the internet, and 24 hour a day TV not killed print media.
I have friends still working for some of the publications I use to freelance for. The difference today they are doing most rerites, expenced accounts are only a memory, staff is only a skeloton of what it was, and most never put anything away for the day most of them could not imagine.
When I worked in the medical field it was 24 x 7 x 365, we never closed our doors, and I use to work most holiday as it was OT + a day off or added to vacation some day.
I do recall in my very young childhood when a National Holiday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Year happened. Most of the time ever business was closed.
Yes you could find Gas on the Interstate or Main Highways, maybe a Resturant was also open, Hospitals were open. Police & Fire, and the News Media worked, but everything else was pretty much closed. That all started to change in the 1960's or early 1970's.
