I visited a large antique/collectible show yesterday (Vancouver, WA), saw this Armitage anvil (140# and well-used), and wondered about the whereabouts of Hoyt Buck's anvil.

I was tempted to buy it. I inspected it and found no cracks. The face had rounded edges so it could use resurfacing in order to make it a good user. It wasn't small, more medium, not large. I understand that a 200 pound anvil is the base, from which you go up, for a good user.

Anvils, apparently, go for $2 - $6 per lb. This one was marked $250. I'll see the vendor again in the spring so I have time to think about it. The seller said that farm auctions have been a rich pickin ground for old user anvils.

I did nab a small iron jeweler's anvil for fun, about 9 ounces, for $22 (note: fingergroove 110 for size comparison/scale):

First...sorry about the bad pictures. These were taken with my cell phone when I was at the Buck Factory last July.

I believe I remember this being the anvil in question. It is in their museum on site.

Here is his original grinding wheel....again I believe I remember this right.

I'm off to my backpacking trip as soon as my brother shows up in a couple hours to drop Cindy and me off at the trailhead. :)

ITE, that is quite a large collection of small anvils. I would like to see ant horse shoes being made and fitted! :) :) I think that someone told me that the $6/pound old anvils have gold inside so if you acquire an antique anvil check this out for me and let me know won't you...

Stumps, thank you kindly for the photos. It is quite re-assuring for me to know that the Buck family and Buck aficionados honor the bold influential entrepreneur that was Hoyt Buck. Gone but not forgotten. Heart warming.

I spoke to Chuck about the anvil in Buck's museum and we are pretty sure it is Hoyt's. The grinding wheel is not, just a cool piece of history that we thought would look nice with the other items on display. I think Chuck bought the grinding wheel on one of his cross country road trips many years ago.
