Hello to ALL!! No matter tanto style or drop point style, most of all blade come with super pointy tip right out of the box.

I just found out my EDC tip is no longer pointy. Not exactly broken tip, but it just....a bit round.

To all more experienced guys......

Is it due to my mistreatment of the knife, or all knife tip gets rounded over time use, especially EDC knife?

Is there a way to make tip super pointy again?? Most of tips/source i got are teaching more of sharpen blade tank/belly instead of blade tip.

What are you using to sharpen it, and what techniques are you using?

If you're using round ceramic rods, or you're using a Sharpmaker, but skipping off the corners of the rods, that'll cause a rounded tip. Tips are best sharpened with a flat stone, preferably a bench stone, or carefully with the flat side of a sharpmaker rod.

Planterz has the most common reason for rounded tips there.

Done it myself, unfortunately.

When sharpening, consideration needs to be given to the tip.

Too, if you use the tip for precision cutting and such alot, a rounded tip can result (though this can be negated during sharpening).

YEs, Sharpmaker is dangerous in unexperienced (i.e. mine) hands!
Points of mine knifes is a bit roundy too… OOow, I'm lame!
SO, what to do? I don't have flat stones. Should I grind off (and blunt) the area next to tip and then create new edge? Is it possible with brown stones?

I just spend some time sharpening the area leading up to the point, slowly reprofiling and setting back that portion of the blade. I sometimes do bring the top, unsharpened part down to help it along (never too much, it usually kills the lines of the blade shape).

Also, if a good point isn't a real neccessity, I'll just keep it in mind as I sharpen as needed.

I've used Spyderco brown (use what you got, I say). The flats work fine.

The rule is "take your time, no rush."

Could you explain what you mean by "skipping off the corners of the rods"?

Thanks,

I agree, you've probably rounded the tip sharpening. At the end of the sharpening stroke, you should be lifting the tip straight up off the sharpening stone/rod. If the tip slips off, or if you're dragging the tip off unconsciously, that'll round it. If you're unsure, when you come to the end of the stroke, stop completely with the tip still on the stone, and then lift up and off, and see if the movement feels different from what you normally do.

A very, very simple fix for this is to make a couple of tiny swedges on the back side with a file.

Thanks,

I'll try to illustrate:
