Has anybody seen any lately? I've checked every supplier I can think of and can't locate any. I need a stabilized block or scales with good figure for a project. If you have some or know where to find some, let me know! Thanks

After some searching I didn't find much either. There is what looks like a nice block of dark grey on eBay. Same seller has multiple listings. Maybe they can fix you up?

Get a board of of nice curly maple ....cut it into slightly oversize blocks....and send it to K&G for dying and stabilizing.

I did not check eBay, thanks I'll keep an eye out.

Thanks Stacy, I'll look into it but I don't need a bunch of blocks. I'm not sure how cost effective that would be for me. I'll keep looking in the meantime.

*Actually looking at the K&G website, if they do as little as a pound, it might be worth considering

Stacy or anyone else, how is pricing on having someone like K&G run? If exact pricing is against the rules that's ok I'm more interested if its cost effective to do it and if so how much would you recommend doing in one go? I imagine a single block would be expensive but I'm guessing I don't need to send 8 feet worth of scales either. Thanks!

From their website it's 14 per lb for natural or 17 per lb for dyed and it sits in the dye for 3 weeks before stabilizing. I can't wait that long.

Is that weight measured before or after stabilizing? Would assume after but wonder how to estimate what a job will cost beforehand.

Weight is measured after stabilizing by K&G
They do great work but have had batches returned not fully cured and it took several weeks in the AZ climate to completely harden.
If it smells of acrylic it is still outgassing

Thanks. Can you tell me what type of wood you had that curing problem with?

I think most of the woods double in weight after stabilizing. Maybe not quite that much. You pay finished weight. Email me if you still need some, I think I have a couple blocks left. Comes out more of a steel grey.

I have had lots and lots of wood stabilized by K&G.
What you are describing can happen with oily woods such as rosewood, thuya, and some of the other oily woods.
That is just what you go through with some woods when you get them stabilized.

I have had curly redwood treated by both WSSI and K&G, based on Mark's recommendation. I also had some maple and birch done at the same time by WSSI. In both cases all the wood took some weeks (let's say 2 months in humid UK to be safe) to stop smelling like a chemical works. I just take this as part of having my own wood treated. For the redwood, K&G were much more successful at achieving full penetration, but I have been very happy with other wood from WSSI.

Postage wise, you guys have it good. Send as much wood as you can pack into one of the standard USPS flat rate boxes. After treating it will fit in the same box and still be within the weight limit. For me sending wood from the UK, it cost 50% more to ship the raw wood out by Royal Mail than it does to have the treated wood come back in a USPS box. And even with all that postage, and the VAT and £8.50 ransom charge, each block is still cheaper than buying ready treated wood from the U.S. or the UK (where quality is unreliable).

Hey. I live in Castle Rock Washington. We have some of the best figure wood there is. If you wanted some rough saw, i have some on my land. if you had a picture of the style you want and dimensions, just had a storm knock a few over in the big ravine. i would be glad to help you out if possible.
