Please excuse the dumb question, but I'm wondering where this custom shop is. There doesn't seem to be an online storefront...

What can they do? I'm looking for a few knives that aren't in production--do they make those upon request? I see a ton of Busse on the FS forums that have all these handles made from exotic materials and are of past production models, but they all look brand new (Liu Kang).

A lot of the custom shop stuff is sold at shows, like Blade, Knob Creek, or the traveling trough show that is happening now. Also, custom shop knives have been sold in the past through Ganzas.

From what I understand, the BCS will do mods to a knife you own, and they can build you a pre-existing model to your specs. That being said, it can be enormously expensive. This is all based on stuff I've read on the forums. What I would do is call up Busse and talk to someone about the services they offer. When I called Busse to inquire about a mod, I spoke to Lexi, and she was incredibly helpful and easy to talk to.

You can call and ask what blanks are availabe. If they have what you want then you're in luck. My understanding is that it is (or atleast used to be) around $100 per inch. For example the BOSS Jack is 11.25" long and as a regular offering starts at $267. To have the same size knife made by the Custom Shop (like the Satin Jack) it would be $1125 and they would have to have a blank available.

I read somewhere that if you want a custom shop Busse made, they charge $100 a square inch... correct me if i'm wrong fellas

it's a rough estimation and it's per linear inch. It also depends on if you want a 'customization' or a true 'custom'. Customization are where you take a standard blank like the BOSS jack and modify it to a new form. A true custom would like if you wanted the BOSS jack to have a blade catch/second guard on it, that would require the custom shop to cut a one off blank out of a bar of steel, resulting in a full custom charge of roughly 100$/Inch, if they okayed the order to begin with.

I think emails are nicer for the crew since they can be prioritized and don't require crew to handle them on the spot, but if you want to make sure to get through you may want to call. Emails can dissapear, not get read or linger for weeks before getting answered, where calls generally get through the first time.

Thanks, folks. That's a hefty price... I was considering going through their BCS for a few models I was looking for--KZTT and SAR3 or Cultellus--but obviously the FS forums will be much more friendly to me financially

Post in the WTB (wanted to buy) forum with what you are looking for or wait for the next GANZA (ALASKA GANZA soon).
Don't be in a rush, patience will reward you with some fantastic knives.
Check feedback score and the Good Bad & Ugly forum before purchasing.

I thought the custom price was by the inch, but only counting blade length? $1100 seems out of the ball park for a custom CABS or what ever, considering the prices I have seen many bigger custom shop pieces sold for, including with exotic handle materials (like rams horn, etc).

One sure way is to get it from the horses mouth!

The 6" blades I've placed orders for were in the 600-800$ range.

This is true. I wanted a particular model from the BCS and they said they couldn't do it as they didn't have any blanks or the programming available (presumably for the CAD machine?) to help me.

Chris.

So it's safe to assume that it's a hundred dollars per linear inch of blade plus extra money for the finish and handle scales.

The moab was initially 1,800$ and is now 2,300$, so there comes a point at which the blade length transitions into overall length for cost.
