Where is the CG of the Busse Basic #7

So it has been tested and confirmed that Busse is a better chopper than MD, but I don't what to order one without actually feeling it. However I just cannot find a dealer here in Canada where I can handle the knife.

One scientific way to measure how well it will chop is to measure the weight and the centre of gravity of the knife. An un-scientific way to measure the CG is to balance the knife horizontally on your index finger.

My Randall #16 balances itself right on the finger guard. So if the CG of the Busse Basic #7 is in front of the finger guard, then it will be a better chopper than the Randall, provided that they have the same weight and geometry. The Randall #16 weights 14oz. However a better chopper also means it is blade heavy and not as lifely. So can any Busse owner out there tell me where is the CG?

Barnaby,

Its not just a question of where the blade balances. Its also important to look at where the weight is on the blade. A blade with plenty of weight at the CG will be better at maintaining momentum.

I thought that is what I said, weight and CG. No? Actually I should say weight, CG and blade geometry.

I' ve a #7 on my finger tip at this very moment. The balance (CG) is at the ricasso with finger in palm up position and right up against the start of the Resiprene handle. The "scale" is tipping ever so slightly at the blade end though. With that and a slightly dropped handle for better leverage I guess the Busse would make for a decent chopper. Please note though: the blade measurement for my Busse #7 is 6.5" sharpened edge, and 7.25" total exposed from spine down to tip. How is that 7" measured?

Given that the weight distribution are almost the same but the Randall is slightly heavier, I don't think I'll spend money on the Busse. Yes the INFI steel will stay sharp longer than the ss, but I enjoy sharpening my knife while sitting in front of a camp fire :-)

related topic: where is the ctr of gravity on the Steel Heart 2? I know it's a bit beefier and heavier than the #7. But is its weight centered further down the blade, or also in the ricasso area?
