I would like to take a stab at knife making. Where could I get some free knife plans or a step by step tutorial? also please post other helpful links.

Thanks Kenny

Here is what I can say. MAke the handles almost 5" long and just draw away....cut them out in wood and see how they feel. Look on knifenetwork.com for tutorials

Look around a little bit, do a Google search I did a quick search on How to make a knife? and these were the results: 6,170,000 hits for how to make a knife.

google me

Right here, Kenny! Welcome to Bladeforums. Enjoy!:D

what tools do most of you use for making knives? what machines do I really need? What is a good book to buy?

Take a look around www.knifekits.com and www.texasknife.com , they both can hook you up with kits to make your own knife. You don't have to go this route but it lets you get your feet wet without the need for too many tools or too much elbow grease :D JJust pick a blade style you like, and do whatever you want to it. You don't have to worry about all the cutting grinding and heat treating that way. You can go straight to making your own from scratch too, but the kits are a good way to start if you ask me.

As far as what tools you need to make your own knife from scratch, you can get by with as little as a hacksaw and set of files, or you can go full blown with all the power equipment you can afford. Its up to you to decide how you want to do it.
You'll also want to decide if your going to forge or do stock removal and if you want to do your own heat treating. If you are going to do your own heat treating I suggest you start with O1 steel, and that you go to http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com/ and read up on building a forge. You'll need at least a torch set up if your going to heat treat stuff.

One power tool that would be very hard to do without is a drill press. That will let you drill pin holes and stuff nice and square so they all line up and your peices come together flat. Aside from that, you can do very good work with hand tools if your willing to take the time.

I'm a newbie, and the hardest jthing for me is learning to fit handles and guards. You might want to start with knife kits, or blade blanks.

DO NOT ASK THESE GUYS ABOUT HEAT TREATING, EDGE GEOMEDTRICS, ANVILS, OR ANTLER DUST (That includes Never, ever, sending any emails to IG or Mark until you have met them, drank with them and put their arm down in fair combat. Be careful of Higgins too, he's known for dirty fighting).

Regards,

Dave

When I started, I had a bunch of files, then a bunch of knives and no files to file with. Oh, by the way, I think I am still a newbie, and because I dont plan an being a full time maker, I always will be. Thats Ok with me. I have had several people in the past (actually, almost everyone that saw what I was making) ask me to make them knives. Some even offered real money! I now have various power cutting and grinding tools, and will be building a small gas forge in the spring. (My wife got me a new Anvil for christmas). But really, just go to it, I think individual style is paramount. Good luck, and hang on tight, even when it gets sortof hot.

what kinda' knife making are you doing?
also, your gonna need to make an investment in your lessons. The Complete Modern Blacksmith, The $50 Knife Shop, and any others like that are all good. Nix the C M B if you aren't forging. Anyways,
Black Smithing tools cheap
-Stake Anvil (CHEAP)
-Anvil Base (A stump and cement will work)
-Tongs (not pliers, tongs) I like wolf jaw, but other pairs will work
-A forge of some sort (go with propane, and check of Reil1.net [the forge almost a foot by a foot])
-HammerS (you'll need either a 11/2 or 2lb for lightwork, and then a 3lb) the common smithing hammer is the cross pein, but 1 ball pein comes in handy
-A quality junkyard (cheap steel and many items to strap things together.)
I believe that's all for smithing, but someone else with have to tell you for removal method.

As stated above, you have found the place to get started. I started here a bit longer than 2 1/2 years back. Ain't no place else I go to first. Stay here and become good at what you wish to do.

IG,

After your remark about putting a target on my back, I just laughed. I mean, we're separated by hundreds of miles, right? What could you possibly do to me?

Now I know--you put a Voodoo Curse on me. I took off early from work today with some excuse or the other, it was a nice day and I though I'd go home and make the little Bird and Trout knife I've been wanting to do.

I was grinding away, really focused, sparks just flying!

All of a sudden my stomach got hotter than hell, looked down and my shirt was on fire. A hell'va blaze too! I danced around patting my stomach like a fool. Finally had to throw the water I was using to cool the steal on my ole belly.

a close one, and it drove me to the beer. Had to laugh, don't mess around with IG and the guys. Don't pay!!!

Dave

Thanks for all the info. I dont really want to get into forging yet. I am looking for some plans for building a belt grinder.
I think I am going to start out with one of those knife kits.
