I know that the forum is huge, but I can not find info on collecting knives. That is not my total question, but before I make a fool of myself I would like to know. Please direct me to where knife collecting might be.

If I was to start a collection today, what would be the best knives to start with? I think that is a little more clear.

Still too open ended... most of us have our own sense of personal identity we relate to the knives we buy... some collect case knives, some busses, some spydercos, and some a little of everything. I collect knives I can use and don't have any as a technical "collection". If you are looking to collect for investment properties... well Busse's almost always go up in value over time... otherwise.. I'm not the one to answer this question

Really depends on what your interest/taste and budget is. There really is no RULE for collecting, it just kind of...builds up.

Just start looking, research lots, ask questions and enjoy.

You will find all the info you need about this subject on this new invention called the internet.

I'm no expert but it seems the first thing to do would be to define the purpose of your collection (though that could change over time.) If you plan on using some or all of your knives, it will be a different collection than if you plan on simply collecting them and not using them.
Like with other collectibles, the most 'valuable' ones are usually the rarest ones (no longer produced, produced in small quantities, maybe custom/handmade, etc..). Of course they're also the most expensive.

Nothing against Case knives but they have taken over this thing called the internet. Every site I have been looking at talks about Case knives and nothing else.

I am looking at knives, customs in particular that will hold value. I will also say that there seem to be no good lists of rare or valuable knives that I can find. I was hoping maybe some of you would know what knives to invest in. (example: Loveless, Moran)

When you do find a knife that you like, buy it, take photos, and post them here (we like pix). Then repeat. . . .

And remember, today, buy what you like today . . . tomorrow, buy what you like tomorrow. And so on. Your tastes will change with experience, and your collection will grow . . . trust us.

And if your tastes change dramatically, which is not unusual, you can always find someone to sell your old knives to. And good knives kept in collectable condition (BNIB = Brand New In Box, or LNIB = Like New In Box) hold there value fairly well, so you won't take a hit when you decide to sell one and move on to something else.

If you get the opportunity, go to a Knife Show (or a Gun & Knife Show) in your area and handle as many different kinds of knives as you can. Also ask lots of questions - many dealers are willing (and able) to give you the answers. A subscription to BLADE magazine doesn't hurt either. And, of course, read the posts here - there are many knowledgeable folks on the forum.

You are pretty much smack dab in the middle of the knife collecting capitol of the world.

What you are suffering from is knife sensory overload, and it will calm down once you've gotten more comfortable navigating about the forums.

What knives are you looking for in particular? Why do you want to collect them? Will they be used, or will they be stored away and admired only (safe queen)?

Do you know what you are looking for? If so, take a look around the forum that you think offers you the best chance of finding your dream knife/knives and ask some questions, post some threads, make some friends and start building your collection...

Welcome to the forums, by the way!

The good news is, we have a forum on Custom & Handmade knives. That's where you would find the kinds of knives you describe.

The bad news is, invest? Ha ha ha ha ha ... The experts can't agree, and by the time they do, the market has changed again.

You can, but you really do have to do a lot of homework, learn the makers, learn the styles, learn the market, and handle the knives themselves. That means going to shows, where you can actually talk to the makers about their work.

As far as investing goes, collecting knives is a long way from collecting baseball cards or coins. Anyone can make a knife, and often the value can change depending on an infinite array of factors.

If you haven't explored the Busse Combat forum, I would do so. The way Busse produces their knives, there are many collectibles out there that fetch top dollar from many of the "Hogs". They produce one or two styles of knives at a time, and then generally don't produce it again... These knives generally hold their value pretty well.

While you're at it, get yourself a good EDC (every day carry) knife and use the crap out of it! Not all knives are made to be collected!

I can think of two brands that people just throw their money at with little or no thought at all. Busse and Microtech. Start with those if you want to get into this hobby to try and make money. If you're actually passionate about knives then you should start researching custom makers designs for something you like.

Everyone has their own perspective on knife collecting. First, figure out why you want to collect. For me, I "collect" higher end knives, but I only collect what I want to use at some point. I carry and use a Microtech kestrel made in september of '99. Some people would be royally upset at that. I dont own any customs yet(I have a Nirk Tighe on order that I cannot wait for) but even that will be used. I do keep some knives strictly as they call Safe queens that I do sell on occasion just to fund the hobby. Its a personal choice. Some people collect all one brand, type or maker of a knife and then years down the road they may be worth alot more. but for most of us, this seems to just be a simple hobby(or extravagant). I have a dealer friend that helps me with most of my decisions. Get to know a local dealer or through a kinfe club and go from there. There are no real rules if its for a simple hobby.

I appreciate the help. I had a feeling that there would be no one answer. Today, I am looking at knives to carry, but will want to sell some later to support my habit. I mean hobby.

Sprint run production knives are always good. I would try to get a knife in a rare steel coupled with quality handle materials(carbon fiber, titanium).

I'd imagine the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in S90V and Carbon Fiber will be worth a pretty penny a few years from now.
