Hey guys , where is your forge when running? I am going to build me a forge with a blower burner and PID controlled.
A few weeks ago I watched some guys try to light one and had flames shooting 10' up in the air and that would have been on my ceiling. After that I thought it has to be outside but it looks like a lot of you do it inside??? I am guessing they were not familiar with the gas valve and opened it up way to much and I dont think they had the fan cut on?? So how much room above the forge makes you comfortable?? If the current goes out and the fan quits what does the flame do?? I have a shop with a concrete floor and about 9 1/2' ceiling height and dont want to burn it down.

Also I am still looking for a fan, and this one http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/DAYTON-Square-AC-Axial-Fan-4WT47?Pid=search is a hundred bucks cheaper than one from the blacksmith supply. And reason why it wouldnt work??

Outside is good. I have seen some guys put their forge on some kind of cart so they can roll it inside for whether protection.

My little freon tank forge is so small that i just haul it outside when i want to do something and then haul it back in when i am done. its really easy.

A well built forge shouldn't breath fire to the ceiling. Even a blown verical forge at full throtle should only have "dragon's breath" of 12" or so. I keep mine by the garage door but I see no reason that a decent forge couldn't be ran in a well ventilated work area. Carbon monoxide rises up with warm air and if you keep the forge away from the walls, you're doing fine.

I placed mine on a BBQ cart to keep it mobile...
Here are a few different set-ups....

I have mine on a roller cart but most of the time I use it the shop. I have never had a problem with it flaring up just start it on low let it warm up and your good to go. My forge is a venturi type don't think it makes much difference. The only thing is I have a big fan to suck out all the fumes . It is great during the winter get the shop all nice and warm not as much fun in the summer...... steve

I have mine on a roller cart and put it outside when I forge, once it is cooled down I roll it back into the garage or shed.

I do like the idea of benefiting from the heat in the winter, on wheels for the summer . I have an old oval oil drum I was going to build a pig cooker with but am thinking I could cut it in half and hang it over the forge and put some stove pipe that runs like a chimney outside. I wonder if it would work to just put a Y in the stove pipe and use the same chimney as my wood heater hmmmm?? or just use new stove pipe and elbow it out and up? with my shop layout each method has pros and cons
