I current own and love the case cv yellow handed trapper
I want to upgrade to chestnut or some wood handles. Maybe a different manufacturer.

Do you want to stick with the same pattern (trapper) or are you willing to try something else?
Queen, Case, and Boker might be worth a look. If pattern choice is not strict, then it's not a bad idea to add Buck, Victorinox and Opinel to the list :)

The carbon steel Bokers are the best bet for that price range.
Great Eastern knives start at around $60 and their quality is tops.
I'm not sure what a basic Canal Street Cutlery knife is going for currently, but all of my recent purchases from them have been excellent.

Any interest in old knife brands? You can pick up an original Schrade Old Timer (look for USA on the tang stamp) for well under fifty dollars. Those are likely the most popular traditional American knives of all time.

Happy shopping!

My other traditional is a alox electrican and love it but the class of the case I really enjoy

If you're after a trapper, and wish to try some other manifacturer, then a Boker carbon trapper or a Queen 51 trapper in birdseye maple (abd D2 steel) would be good options.
As for Schrade OT's, they're usually found on the internet in mayor retail and auction websites.

An opinel of course! You can get a nice No. 8 (what I have in pocket right now), and have enough to buy a good SAK too.

Great Eastern Farm and Field line, Boker, some Queens can be had.

Have you looked at hunting the flea markets/junk malls. I've noticed that the junk is overpriced, and the good stuff can be had a for a great deal. Sometimes that even applies to knives, but then again, most junk mall stall dealers will overprice everything, and expect you to haggle them down to a reasonable price.

Two words: Rough Rider. Never heard of them before joining this forum not too long ago, but everyone spoke so well of them that I just had to try a couple. That was pretty painless, since you can buy three for the price of a Case. I can't really say RR is just as good as a Case, but a Case is nowhere near three times as good as a RR.

I am really pleased with my marlinspike, with its big, very sharp sheepsfoot blade. I also liked the look of the camp knife for the short time I had it before my wife appropriated it for service in her bus bag. These are both very solid, hefty knives that give no indication of cheap construction that you might expect at their price. I am looking forward to trying some smaller patterns.

Under $50 new with a good reputation would be Buck (both the 30x made in USA and 37x/38x made in China) Marbles, Colt, Rough Rider, Taylor-Schrade.

A grab bag of opines and svords.

Or grab an old delrin schrade Walden of your choice pattern and let it continue to work for you as it is still going to be in good shape for the coin.
