Where should I buy my first khukri? (help!)

Ok, as the title says I'd like to buy a khukri and I'd like one of good quality... maybe not the absolute 100% best, but still something good that I could use practically if I wanted.

The question, who d I buy from?!

I’ve done some research before asking here and this is what I’ve found out:

Himalayan Imports (http://www.himalayan-imports.com/) seems to be the best place, but also the most expensive, right

The question is if http://www.thekhukurihouse.com/ or http://www.nepalesekhukuri.com/ makes khukris that are just as good, but at a lower price?

Anyone got some experience?!

Any information is very much appreciated! Thanks.

i was very disappointed with the kukri i ordered from khukurihouse, i have no experience with HI but would recommend against KHHI. the sheath leather was half cured rawhide (stunk of dead flesh), the blade was pitted, the fuller (chira) had a huge dip in one spot, the gold colored filling in the decorative pattern was missing in spots. For a company that claims to quality check each kukri before they ship it out, i was shocked and appaled at these quality issues.

I've been happy with the various surplus/used kukris I've aquired. The most I've paid for these was $30, delivered in two cases.

The edges could last longer, but they sharpen up easily, and they have all performed the basic tasks I've asked of them - delimbing, cutting down brush, etc.

I also have a ROS-Arms kukri and it, in the limited use I have put to it, is doing well. The edge lasts longer on the ROS-Arms kukri, the knife displays better craftsmanship, and the knife handles pretty good.

HI is the way to go, don't even think twice about it.

I have two HI products, one a nearly four pound handforged handmade beast of a chopper with a quality sheath and excellent quality. Gotten for under 200.

I can't imagine getting anything similar anywhere else for that price.

I can recommend HI as well.

Another option is UK supplier Tora Blades. Shipping might be a bit more, but their khuks are also very nice, and should perform better than the cheaper specimens.

Ultimately, spec out models from selected vendors most suitable to what you want to do with 'em (chopping small trees, brush clearing, etc), see what fits your budget, and all other factors being equal, go with the one you like the looks of best. :D

Himalayan Imports is the best place to buy a top quality Khurki. :)

And as mentioned they have a forum here on BF. :)

I know, I have 14 of them. :eek::D

I expect nothing less from my Himalayan Imports than to be able to stab them through old appliances until I get bored. With no tip deformation. I tolerate that the tips get dull.
Hand forged with personality, and you can get one for less than $100.

EDIT: Also, customer service. Among the best.

Thanks a lot for all of your replies. This was very helpful.

Tora Blades and I've fallen in love with their British Service Issue Pattern kukris. Just what I was looking for. Shipping is fine. I'm from Denmark, so it just on the other side of a big puddle of water :)

Unfortunately they're out of stock, so I'm hoping they will get some soon.

Thanks again.

Oh yes, and Himalayan Imports certainly looks great too. No doubt they make fantastic blades. This might be my first kukris, but I've got a feeling it isn't going to be my last :)

Yeah, looks like almost all their models are out o' stock currently.

Wouldn't mind an Assam Rifles or Limbu Sirupate meself.

HI is the place to go and on Tuesdays they sometimes offer sale models-so start checking their forum am as they usually only have 5-10 offered

I totally agree C.S... Very nice blades. The Butchers Kukri is really lovely too!!

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for deals on HI's forums for sure, godot!

Yes, the Butcher's has caught my eye on more than one occasion too.

The HI Deals o' the Day are fun to watch for, especially when a pattern one is hankering for pops up... or when something rare appears. They're also torture when you don't have the funds at that particular moment. :(

I think a lot of these threads are missing out on information from recent manufacturers.
While HI have lost a bit of prominence and KHHI have taken to CNC plasma cutting most of their blades, a few new manufacturers have sprung from the cracks to fill the market. Gurkhasblades is also doing cnc work, but has developed a small dedicated community who appreciate their very light blades and ornate fittings. Kailash Blades is made from ex employees of KHHI who weren't happy with slipping quality standards there. While not as heavily focused on traditional blades, they've got a few standout models like the pensioner here, as well as having a superior heat treat and a lot of customisation options.
