Hi Beckerheads! Now that christmas is over, I'm FINALLY getting my first Becker. I've gone from 2 dollar taiwan cheapies from the flea market to carrying nothing but ZT's and Kershaw folders in the past 3 years, and a good fixed blade will leave me with a well rounded setup. I was pretty set on getting a BK2, but after lurking in the Becker section the past few months, Im wondering if I'd be better off with a 7 or a 9?
If you could only pick one, which would it be? I camp occasionally, but always have hatchet and 2 knives. I plan on carrying while hunting, or while oout on motorcycle (few hundred miles a month) and when Im in an area where cc of a pistol isnt permitted.

start with a BK14 or esp a BK24. you can stash that anywhere

BK10 and BK16. that's it :)

else a BK5 and BK15 for "exotic"

or just buy a few, try them, use them, give some away, sell others.

don't go "big" until you feel the need

I love my 2, but if I had to choose between my 2 and 9, I'd be hard pressed not the choose my 9.
After all, you can't not have a 9.
A 9 would pair well with your folders.
But you can't go wrong with a 2, 7, or 9. Just about any of the BK&T line would be an excellent choice.

I'd start with a BK-16 if you are planning on using it for hunting. In my opinion, both the BK-7 and BK-9 (throw in the BK-10 and BK-2 also) are simply too big for hunting chores. Better to have a saw along with you for bigger cutting tasks. My hunting knife for field chores is a Spyderco Moran drop point (3") if that gives you any indication on functional size.

The BK-14 or BK-24 would work nicely too. It is about sharpness and control, not brute force.

Both the BK-7 and BK-9 are very cool blades and I recommend you consider them if you want a big blade, but not for hunting. Scouting.... sure.

When I carry a fixed blade as an EDC, I carry something even smaller (Dozier Personal) than the BK-24 although I am fond of the BK-24. Been carrying the BK-14 and BK-24 some of late too. I just like them. You have to decide the purpose of the knife you are carrying as an EDC. Self defense is one of the last considerations for me, but that's me.

I vote 17.

Perfect size for camp chores, great shape for a hunter, stabby for self-defense.

After reading your post I was reccomend 17 as well. Seems to cover most of the tasks that you said you'd use it for. Sice you carry a hatched no need for a chopper but if you want to leave the hatchet (I do now) then get a BK9

Thats odd, the 17 wasn't even on my radar, but looking at it, I think Eero, you and Guyon are right on the money.
Don't get me wrong guys...I WILL be getting more down the road (it's a long road though..money is tight). There will be a 2 and *maybe* a 9 in my toolchest someday :)

if you start with the 17, make your second the 9 or 7 (or if you like drop points, the 12) -- the 2 is only an additional inch of blade over the 17.

You need a BK9. You can't not have a 9.

Really though, what knives do you carry now? What do you like/not like about them? Do you wish you had something bigger/smaller/thicker/thinner?

BK2 is great but the thickness hinders it's usefulness. I prefer the 10 to the 2 myself, though I won't be getting rid of my 2.

Thanks you Guyon, the visual helped

Good point. Second might very well be a 7

I know...and all the doubters wind up converted, so there's no way I'll write the 9 off...Just not yet.
I have no fixed blades that I carry. I acquired a custom through the PIF thread I participate in, but I passed that on to my son (was the plan from the get-go). It was a great piece, and it's dimensions were pretty close to the 2 (pic below). As far as folders, I carry a ZT0350 or ZT0200. that's about it (I keep a Kershaw in my motorcycle vest as a "just in case".

I think you'll need one of each size Becker in a relatively short time period. I made the mistake to wait, and I shouldn't have. A small one like a BK14/24, a Tweener of your choice (I have the 16 and quite like it, but if you prefer stabby, there's botht the 15 and 17), and probably a 9 from the larger beckers.
Regardless of your pick, your gonna have a lot of fun:thumbup:

Ok, after all the wondering, I wound up ordering (and received today) the BK2. I figured I have enough folders for "stabby" needs, but no real folder. I am LOVING the 2...fits well in my hand, decent edge, and even with the weight, it carries well (I have a5.11 belt made for carrying the weight of my pistol, so that might help).
Now to start working on some mods and save up for a 9 (and possibly still get the 17). :)

congrats on the 2..... the first of many :) throw up some mod pics when they are done.

Will do...I think the first is strip it, then play with the mustard :)
Actually, Number ONE will be the sheath....I am not liking the stock one. Damn near impossible to draw the knife with 2 hands, not even going to try 1 handed.

I also vote 17. If you want smaller, get a 14. If you want large and awesome, get a 9.

Actually, save yourself some trouble and just get them all! :p

If I had the money I would (heck with money...if my wife didn't see the credit card statement every month I'd have one of each by now)

Congrats on the 2, also my first. It's a great knife.
