Hi everyone, I've decided I want to build me a custom knife. I have the design scetched out and all, but, obviously I need some good steel. I heard that 420HC is perfect for making knives. I've searched all over the internet, but can't find any for sale. Could someone tell me a place to but it? This will be the first knife I've ever made by the way.

Thanks, GotThemKnives

Are you set on stainless? If so Id go up to something like 154cm anyway and unless you have the equipment your going to have to send it out for HT..dosnt cost anymore to HT a good steel over a sub-par steel..420HC isn't that bad, but there is a whole lot better out there friend.

Might have to. I don't know what to use yet, but Im probaly going to have to use 154cm. Thanks for suggesting that, probaly just made my knife better!

Yes, if you are going with stainless for the blade, consider CPM154, Elmax, and my personal but hard to get in thinner sizes M390. Frank

OP, to answer your original question just Google "knife making supplies" and I'm sure you'll come up with a list of sources for whatever steel you choose. I know of several but can't link to them here (violates TOS). But they're not that hard to find.

As far as I know, Buck is the only one using 420HC and they use it because it's cheap to buy and cheap to work.

Fans of Buck will recommend it, but that's just a brand loyalty thing.

When Buck sells special runs of good steel, they sell well.

As above, try CM 154, ATS34,

See this link for a bunch of info including suppliers

I can't find it now, but there is a 420hc sucks thread that's probably 50 pages long.

Another vote for AEB-L. It's inexpensive and a clean steel that holds an edge.

Yep either NJSB or Aldo as everyone calls him or Chuck at Alpha Knife Supply. You will like AEB- L.
