Where to buy a big block of ivory?

All,

I need to buy a fairly big block of mammoth or mastodon ivory (think bowie handle). In the past I have bought from an outfit that would cut blocks to shape. They had some amazingly white ivory. However, I can't remember the name of this outfit.

If anyone could give me their recommendation, that would be well appreciated.

Thanks,

JD

Koval Knifemakers supply in Ohio has a Faux ivory that is nearly identical to really clean elephant ivory. I have used it for a couple of years on large Bowie knife handles and they still look great.

A few years ago I contacted Tim at Ivory works limited, told him I would like to buy 15 sets of the best blue mammoth ivory he had, he said "no problem I will box them up and send them right out" I said, do you want me to send a check and he said "no just send a check when you get them" well, I never got them, several phone calls, emails and excuses, then after a few weeks he wouldn't talk to me or answer my emails  Now I spend over $10,000 a year on ivory and pearl and deal with most of the major suppliers and have never had a problem with any of the others. I don't know what their problem was but I will not buy from them and they have the highest prices out there. Alot of better dealers out there to deal with.

Joss, a solid bowie size block of white mammoth is probably the hardest ivory to locate and at the moment I don't know of any available. I buy 95% of my ivory at shows were I can look at it before I buy. Most of these guys do not have web sites, Don Fields, Jerry Kochiser(spelling?), Dan W. (ivoryDan) Here are a few guys I've bought from below that have sites. You may have to go with ivory works to get the piece you need. I'll do some looking and if I find something, I'll let you know.

akivory here on BF.

Don - would walrus be more realistic? I need something 6" X 2" X 5/8" growing to 1 1/4". I know, it's big....

Joss, yes I think walrus would be easier to locate in that size, that's a large handle, you may have to look for awhile to find it. Elephant would be no problem to get from ivoryseller.com, listed above. I don't know of anyone who has mammoth that size, so if ivoryworks has it, you might want to just go with them. Dan Weston (sp?) may have the walrus, he's also in your neck of the woods, ph# 360-795-0228. Hope this helps.
