Just wondering where is the best place to pick up a dewar for liquid nitrogen? And what size should I be looking for? Thanks in advance.

The Chinese made ones can be bought from eBay or Vevor. 10L seems to be a good size.

A thing to consider is the diameter of the dewar mouth is a limiting factor for knife design. The opening width is often a little under 2 inches.

Scrounge around for one! Fb Marketplace worked for a buddy of mine and he got a 30L with a 2.5" opening for a couple hundred. I work at a University and pulled a Wharton Taylor XT18 out of the dumpster and a MVE 30 L with 2.5" opening out of the dumpster, just had to order foam core plugs for them! University/College Science Departments often have them and get rid of them if they aren't used for a while. Or check at local health centers (LN2 is used to freeze warts and skin tags), to see if they have an old one they are replacing. Same with old farms; they can be used to freeze semen to inseminate farm animals.

LN2 dewars have a long neck, so sometimes the knife isn't fully submerged in the liquid or may take up more of the opening, so a 10L one may not be as deep as you would think! The vapors are will cool the item down in the neck, but may take longer.

Another alternative is Denatured Alcohol and Dry ice. I picked up some spackle trays for that purpose, or if I need to pour LN2 out into the tray for larger stuff that won't fit. (Gotta be very carefull pouring!!!!)

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think about vevor. They are cheap. There's a Taylor Wharton LF10 on marketplace that's not too far away. i was thinking about it, but wasn't sure about buying used. I didn't know if they might not hold vacuum or have other problems and just be a waste money.

Do a search on Amazon for this item number B00UJ7E18Q for a 10 liter dewar for $240 which is a good price. It's a US company - not sure where they're actually made, but here's a link talking about the company: https://ussolid.com/pages/about-us (I think that link is ok?)

Here's a cheaper 10 liter dewar for $190 B0D78QS11D (Amazon item number) but I don't know anything about the company. US Solid seems to be good. I purchased a 10 liter dewar and lost the foam plug. They sent me a new plug free of charge, shipped free. I thought that was good service.

+1 for the US Solid 10l, has served me well.

I got the YDS-20-80 (20 litre 80 mm neck) straight from the factory in China. Boss Henan Cryo. Execellent quality and service. 3 day delivery to Sweden. Would not go smaller. Check their webpage, they have all the dimensions and illustrations of how small a dewar is on the inside compared to the outside.

You notice that the wide mouth has a loss rate of 0.21 litres per day? Narrow mouth is 0.12L/day.
I noticed that. I figure that LN2 isn't crazy expensive and the wide mouth would make it easier to cryo in batches with multiple and/or larger knives.?

I think it depends on what you are making.

I can get 15-18 belt knives in the 10L dewar but kitchen knife height is limited which is fine with me as I am only making 7inch kitchen knives and no cleavers.

If Ln2 is easy to get and cheap in your area than probably not an issue like you said.

I only go and get a few inches LN2 in the dewar when it's HT time. So evaporation is no issue
I never thougt about that. I guess as long as the blades touch any liquid nitrogen they would reach cryogenic temp. Does complete submersion make a difference?

ya'll have semen places?!
REI collects semen from cows, horses, goats, hogs for artificial insemination. They have 500-gallon tanks of liquid nitrogen to quick freeze and store the collected semen. They sell Dewars to transport and store semen at the farm.

In Canada, you buy liquid nitrogen and dry ice from the welding supplier Praxair.

There are surplus dewars, but they are usually huge and probably lost/losing the insulation.

You can buy new, but watch the neck/throat size.
