I cannot find spring shops in the area just yet. where do you guys order your metal from. I have some old leaf springs but i would rather use new stock that does not have to be straightened out. I have found a couple of places but what do you guys think is the best and cheapest.

Take a look under blade material here.

For 5160 you might want to take a look at Admiral, Uncle Al and Swain Spring.

If you're looking for O1 and some of the other carbon steels can also find them somewhere local. Have a place called Metal Supermarkets here which I've been told to use. Still haven't yet, but that's cuz I have a bunch of steel just sitting around still from old orders.

I get flat ground O1 from an industrial tool supply (EDCO) in town, they supply milling equipment and tooling to a bunch of industrial applications and have a showroom to deal with the public too. Price is pretty good, you might find something similar near you.

For my other steel, I've been ordering from www.texasknife.com , and I just recently got in touch with Terry at Admiral Steel, and will probably start doing some business with them too.

Sheffield's Knife Supply has precision ground D2, A2 and O1 for less than Admiral Steel. They're worth a shot. Also Texas Knifemaker's Supply sells those steel's by the foot, so you only have to buy what you need.

For O1, A2 and D2, flatground.com is about half price compared to Admiral Steel and even lower compared to the knife supply sites. This is the online sales site for Bohler/Uddeholm, North America.

Don't forget about McMaster Carr. They might not always be the cheapest, but chances are you will get your order within two days.

McMaster Carr

I would also check with your local scrap yard. I have scored some pretty good deals by shopping around on the phone.

Uddeholm has excellent quality and good pricing. been buying their tool steels for very long time, never been let down.
