Where to buy Speedmaster Pro (Moon watch)?

I might be in the market for a Speedmaster Pro (Moon watch) in the next few weeks. I'd like to buy one either gently used or new from a trustworthy dealer (at a serious discount, with serial # intact). Any ideas where to look?

Word of advise on the Speedmasters...

I'm not sure of the availability on the Moon versions, but try to get a shappire cristal, the hexalite scratches with pretty much anything you pass over the watch.

No big marks unless you hit it, but in a 2-3 days it will be all "microscratched" just from the clothings you use :(

Bernard Watch is great to do business with. I have bought and sold watches with them.

That's the whole appeal behind the Omega Speedmasters. The original Speedmasters aka "The Moonwatch," had acrylic crystals. That's how NASA tested them, and that's how most watch purists want them. A domed acrylic crystal has a warmer look than a sapphire crystal. Yes, they do scratch, but they don't shatter. That was one of the considerations in space.... A thousand shards of sapphire crystal would be deadly on a space ship.

I know, but I'm not planning to travel to space anytime soon, so I'd like something that can cope at least with everyday normal use.

First thing I did when I got my Reduced was clean the crystal with my handkerchief... There you go, first 20 marks on it.

Guess I'm not a watch purist, just an afficionado...

Guess I'm a watch purist. If I get a Speedmaster Pro, I want a Moonwatch, Hesalite crystal and all...

You should also check timezone.com. Look around on the site and you'll find the sale forums. I bought my reduced Speedy auto from an individual at a great price.

I'm not sure if you're aware of "gray market" Omegas, but you'll see them for sale much cheaper, as the SN has been polished off. Omega will not service these watches.

Regarding the crystal, yes, my hesalite is all scratched up because I wear it daily. In fact, there is one scratch that probably would have broken the sapphire, so I see hesalite as a plus.

L.O., good luck finding one, and congrats in advance to another Speedy purist!

I have had excellent service from Bernard watch. Also, looka t Costco, they sell # intact Omegas at great prices.

It definitely scratches easier than other watches that I have but I think Tracer is exaggerating a bit. I wore mine 24/7 for 4 years. Yes, it has scratches but it still looks great. Definitely go with the hersalite. The whole point of going with this watch (at least for me) is the history.

Of course it looks good, it's an Omega!!! :D

this one is filled with microscratches and a couple of big ones and it looks perfect.

But I'm not exagerating, if you use long sleeves, the crystal will be full of microscratches by the end if day one. You won't notice them when you look at the watch to check the time, but if you start tilting it to a light you'll see them.

Anyways, I intended this as a healthy advice in case someone didn't know about this, if you want hesalite for whatever reason, be my guest, I won't look down on you or anything for that, to each its own :)

Good luck finding one. I was talking to the Omega rep (some event at Torneau (sp?)) and she was saying those are going fast and there weren't that many to begin with. Nice watch tho!

Thanks for the advice! I found a really nice Speedy Pro with see through caseback (reference 3572.50.00) in the TZ Sales Corner for $1450. It has an intact serial #,an undated warranty card from the authorized Omega retailer that it was originally bought from, and all the goodies that came with it.

Thunderbirds are go!

I was channel surfing the other day and stopped on an old episode of the Thunderbirds. One of the puppet characters checked his watch and the close up revealed....an omega speedmaster! Hey, endorsements don't come much bigger than that.

That Lady Penelope is a babe, grrrrrrr.

If that deal falls through, Bladeart.com had one at the NYCKS this weekend. It's brand spanking new though.

My new (to me) Speedmaster Pro (the one I mentioned earlier) arrived a few hours ago. Except for some scratches in the Hesalite crystal, this thing is perfect. I'm in love!

No problem... a little Flitz, Simichrome or Brasso will take the scratches right out.

In addition to being shatterproof, one big advantage of acrylic crystals is that they are very easy to polish and remove the micro (and sometimes larger) scratches. While harder to scratch if you do ding a sapphire crystal the only way to get rid of it is to replace the crystal.

Different materials for different jobs, but acrylic (or some variation thereof like Seikos sapphlex) has almost always been the choice for dive and pilots watches historically.

That being said, I have one sapphlex, one acrylic, and two sapphire crystal watches and the sapphire does resist scratches a lot better (and on my dress watches they aren't put to much of a test for shattering).
