where to buy steel for hatchet

Looking where to buy 1/4 to 3/8in thick steel to make a full tang hatchet. Need it soft as I will be using hand tools before sending off for heat treat. Looking to make a relatively lightweight hunting/skinning hatchet for personal use. Thanks in advance.

You may have some luck if you look up automotive spring makers/manufactures - repaires in the phone book. They should have some anneled steel for leaf springs. I have used the end of a car spring as a handle hole for a wood handle. But once made to shape they are hardened. Also you said you wanted full tang.
