I know this has been covered in the past but. I need a piece 12 by 28 inches ,1/4 thick.Stainless or carbon. Any lower cost ideas?

try your local metal salvage/recycle place. they will usually "burn" you off a piece of any thing they have . with scrap metal prices down this might be a good time to "stock up ".

You didn't say what kind of steel, beyond "stainless or carbon". Since that description covers all steel, it is not much help. If you just need a piece for some construction project, any of the on-line metal suppliers can do it ( Speedy Metals, Online Metals,Ebay, etc.) If you want blade steel of a specific type (5160,ATS34,etc.) then Admiral Steel or Crucible, Or Kelly Cruples would be good sources.

As said, if you don't need any specific steel, try a scrap yard.

If you are looking for mild steel, a steel yard or recycling place like mentioned above would probably have a piece about that size in their drop pile (cutoffs from another order). 1/4" plate weighs about 10# to the sq ft. So your piece would be about 23#. A while back steel was about a $1 a lb, but, should have fell off that considerable by now. If you are looking for blade steel you may need to check with Admiral or one of the other dealers.

speedy metals has a 12" x 24" piece of 1045 for $40.

4" short.

McMaster Carr's prices for high-carbon are about the same as Admiral's when you factor in Admiral's packaging fees.

Admiral seem to be cheap enough. I ordered from them last week. I think they will be my main supplier. Contact me if you can't find any I should have a 24'' piece. I give to you if you pay shipping.

The nice thing about Admiral is that they have more convenient shorter lengths. Some places may charge more if they have to cut up a standard length (which is understandable) I am not sure how Crucible Service Centers or Carpenter handle this since I always just buy the entire random lengths (typically 11- 12 feet). At any rate Admiral is a very good source for the guy looking for a smaller order.

Get a quote for the steel you are looking for and let me know, I may be able to do better. No promises, but I'll try.
