Where to buy "wing walk" material?

Anyone know if there's a retail source to purchase the "wing walk" material that's used on the handles of the MOD Dieter CQD folders? (not something "similar" or "as good as" - I want the real thing!)

This question kind of irritates me but if you're a Gold Member with 400-odd posts I guess you're no troll and deserve the best answer I can offer.

I presume you're asking about the abrasive insets on their handles. Unless there's someone here who works in manufacturing for MOD - not particularly likely - and who would be willing to share the details of one of their strong selling points - possible I guess - how would anyone know for sure what they use?

So let me suggest something that might work as well, even though you specifically said that's not what you're looking for: Home Depot and most hardward stores sell adhesive tape with a serious grit glazed onto it for use on stairs and ladder steps. The adhesive on this stuff is as close to permanent as one could ask and the abrasive as close to that used in the handle insets as anything I've been able to find, and I've checked this out.

Hope this is of some value.

go to a skateboard or boating shop. They use the stuff for non slip decks. Just cut to shape and apply:)

Ouch!:(

I guess I'll have to get a bit more aggressive when I see yet another post that asks, "So what are you carrying today?" or "I have $200... what knife should I buy?"

I guess you have to own a MOD Dieter CQD folder (or at least have read their magazine print ads or visited their website!) to recognize the product description. From my understanding, any fighter pilot who does a "wing walk" knows what this material is made of. (and I do not believe it is a proprietary MOD product, although the name might be trademarked.) Guess I should have sent my inquiry to MOD in the first place! Sorry.

So.....what's the big deal about Sebenzas...and...I hate Emerson knives!

There you go folks - a two'fer!:D

So - sorry if I "irritated" anyone here!

Hey man, sorry I was so grouchy yesterday. :o You had an honest question, wish I had a real answer for you.

So if I may ask, why is it important to have the exact stuff MOD uses? I should've asked that the first time.

For what it's worth, I dig the Dieter knives and don't grok the big deal about Sebenzas either. Except they are smoooooth... and with the new Crucible steel should work pretty well too.

Because I've never seen (or felt) anything like it! It's hard to describe...it's like tiny bits of crushed glass glued to a flexible backing. The "grip" is unbelievable. I've never seen anything quite similar - and of course I have checked out surf shops, Home Depot for "stair tread tape", etc., etc. I have an email request in to MOD Custom Sales. If they can't help me, I'll contact someone in the Air Force.

I want this stuff to cover the "grip" areas of film cameras, digital cameras, battery housings, etc. when we shoot a commercial or a film in pouring rain or a snowstorm.

(BTW, if you thought I was a troll - ouch!:( - you might have received a conflicting opinion from Tom Mayo, George Tichbourne, Kathleen Tomey, Thomas Haslinger, Alan Blade, GenO Denning, Neil Ostroff, Kirby Lambert, Matt Stocker, Eric Elson, Robert Dockrell, Rob Brown, Michael Cooper, John Greco, Terry Primos, Dale Reif, Murray St. Amour, Darren Chard, or Bud Weston - I probably own the largest collection of Weston hand-made and custom folders in North America.) Sorry, I couldn't resist! :D :D :D

My guys use neoprene hunting gloves or the Nomex flight gloves available from surplus stores, the Nomex gloves come in a winter or summer weight while shooting video or still in adverse conditions. You still have a "good feel for the buttons" with the flight gloves Ever tried them? I'd think you'd get some serious blisters or abrasions with that "wing walk stuff".

Naw, my crews are tough. They all have calloused fingers from counting those fat union pay checks.;)

Tried gloves. Don't like 'em. And, I have my heart set on buying a few sheets of this stuff direct from MOD.

Thanks, Dave. I'll check it out if I don't have any luck with my inquiry to MOD.

Hello Cockroach Farm

How about calling some of the places that service and repair aircraft at the Toronto or Buttonville airports. The people building the aircraft must get it from somewhere.

I have had good luck with a product called 'SKID-TEX', it is made by 'BONDEX'. It is a clear acrylic spray with what appears to be sand crystals in it. It adhears well to most surfaces, and has a great grip. I use it at work on ladder rungs and other areas where tape just won't adhear properly. I have sprayed it on a Buck Crosslock folder, it does wear off eventually though. One nice thing is that is can be removed with most mild solvent cleaners, leaving no trace of having been applied.

As far as cameras and equipment...not sure if it would mar the plastic housings or not. Obviously you would have to tape the camera off to prevent overspray. This may work better for you though in the long run, as it will conform to any shape unlike a tape-on product. In addition, it is almost imperceptable to the eye.

Other companies make similar products, as noted-McMaster Carr is a great place to search for it.

also white six inch strips for about $2.50 a foot.

Thanks, Don. I tried the link but it took me to "Maria's Internet Access". (No, it wasn't a porn site.;) )

I'll try it direct.
