Unless you're specifically looking for something new, I'd add my vote to picking up an old, rusty, generally rough-looking axe at yard sales. Better yet, track down some old timer in your area, who may still have a few axes in perfect condition that they are not using anymore, but don't want to part with yet. Getting them to part with one may be hard, but if they see that someone is genuinely interested in using axes, they may have an easier time letting it go.
Plus, an old axe will likely have a better handle than new ones, provided, of course, that it is still in good shape. If the head is loose, adding a wedge may be all you need to do. It often helps to remove the head, rasp away some of the 'shoulder' directly under the eye, and re-fit the head slightly (1/8" to 1/4") lower than where it sat before.
There is some, ah, discrepancy on the subject of double bits vs single bits for splitting, but in either case a large, well used (meaning worn down from years of use and sharpening) felling-type axe makes an excellent splitter; very often the bevel will not even need re-shaping, just sharpen it and you're good to go!
Sorry for being verbose. Good luck finding an axe!
