Where to buy?

Good afternoon,

This is my first post. I was hoping to get some advice on a knife purchase.

I do a lot of work out of my cabin and my light, everyday carry, Kershaw leek is just not up to the task.

After several much research, I’ve decided that the Bradford Guardian 3.5 fixed blade (tanto) with magna cut meets all my needs.

I’ve looked high and low, but I can’t find it.

I was hoping you guys could help. By pointing me to the right place to purchase or helping me understand the seasonality of when these things are available. Or talk me out of the magna cut and recommending an alternate blade material.

I don’t buy a lot of knives,. I’d rather spend the money, do it once, and do it right.

Many thanks

Order directly from them or go to any credible dealer. Avoid Alibaba. Amazon, Ebay etc.

Also go Bladeforums FAQs to learn about Gold or Platinum membership. I think it would help you if you choose to use the market place here.

Also, think about checking out the many members here who are also makers. You will find out about a myriad and plethora of options.

Your best bet is to tag restock alerts on all the big online sources. DLT, Blade HQ, Knife Center, Knives Ship Free to name a few.

But Tanto's kinda the worst go anywhere do anything shape. There are some MagnaCut ones up for grabs right now.

If it was me, I'd roll the dice on this one.

Great response! The one and only thing I’ll add….Welcome to BladeForums, OP!

Thanks. I didn’t see what I was looking for there (the Bradford site). Though that mystery knife is tempting.

Thanks. I’ll check these out.

It had not occurred to me to have a knife made. I’ll spend some more time on the form and look around.

Tanto aside, I’m looking for a plain looking, old fashioned, belt knife. It will see heavy use in construction and general abuse.

Something along the lines of the Buck 192 vanguard. Something people wouldn’t look twice at.

(I’m on an iPad or not smart enough to attach a photo.)

OP, are you sure they even made the Tanto in MC ? I only see it in M390, N690 and Elmax (great steel).

I am not sure. Maybe it doesn’t exist. That would explain why it’s hard to find.

In looking around, it looked like MC was the best of the best.

MC is just a good mix of different properties, toughness, wear and corrosion resistance.

Elmax is less tough and corrosion resistant (still quite good though), but has more wear resistance, you'll need to sharpen less. It's a trade-off. Have no fear, Elmax will treat you well.

Also, IMO, geometry is always more important than steel. And with your tanto tip, you won't need as much toughness anyways.

Tanto, magnacut, and 3.5" isn't going to be very good for cabin work....

Look up camp knives, field knives, choppers, maybe kephart, and Hudson Bay type knives.

Lots of manufacturers and Makers can get you what you need

In addition to the big stores already mentioned, check out bladeconnection.com. A small store located in Seattle, but they have a good selection and ship nationwide. They are my local go to for a lot of brands I like.

Currently Bradford only lists the Guardian 3.5 Tanto in Elmax. Not as tough as Magnacut, but that's not as important IMO in a smaller blade you're not going to be using for chopping or batoning. Don't cut zip ties or whittle wood with nails and you shouldn't ever have a problem with chipping the blade (zip ties seem to cause a lot of people issues because they are very tough and a lot of people put sideways pressure on the blade when trying to cut them).
It's possible there have been limited runs of the tanto in Magnacut that you'll find some dealers have, but it looks like it's not a normal item.

All that said, that American tanto point is not as useful as an outdoor or utility blade. It will work if you're also wanting it as a small defensive knife with a lot of tip strength to stabbing.

I would not have guessed zip ties could be an issue for steel. Interesting.

Defense is always on the list.

And thanks. I’ll check with bladeconnection.
