I'm planning a weekend in the woods camping and canoeing with my old college buddies in mid sept. Were trying to find a spot to camp somewhere in upstate ny or ct (or withing that two-3 hr driving window). Were trying to stay within 2-3 hr drive of long island. Do you guys have any suggestions?

There's a few spots on the Farmington river in CT that you can camp and canoe on.

I know Kevin Estela knows the exact spots and who to contact. Shoot him an email.

Bob Lander's @ Narrowsburg NY

Not a wilderness experience, but it is some fine canoeing on the Delaware river.
They have rentals and a shuttle service to bring you back up river.

Has anyone stayed at the wildwood state park in long island?

Canoeing through Mainstream Canoe (860) 693-6791 in New Hartford, CT. Camping at Peoples State Forrest or Austin f. Hawes in New Hartford too. Approximately 2 - 2.5 hours from NYC.

Pachaug State Forest around Voluntown, CT. If you take the ferry to New London, it is less than an hour's drive from there.

Austin F. Hawes in in the American Legion State FOREST. Peoples is a State PARK. Different regs on camping. You can have your dog and your beer in State FOREST campgrounds. No pets or alcohol in State PARK campgrounds. I suggest a call to AF Hawes but they do keep a few first come first camped if you show up.
The stretch of Housatonic river between Housatonic Meadows S.P. and Kent Ct. has some good shore/island canoe camping places as the A.T. runs parallel to the river through there. Good take out underneath the Rt. 341 bridge across from Kent School. The Housie may be very low this time of year though.--KV
