Okay... 5160 cant be that hard to come by... I just am not seeming to have much luck finding somewhere that has it in the sizes I need.

Been trying to find about 18-20 inches of 1/4" thickness, thats 4 inches wide.
Can get 4 inches wide, 1/4" from Admiral... but, only in 22 Foot lengths. :p
Have looked at some of the knife making materials suppliers online, and no luck.

So... where on the net could I look that might carry 5160 in sizes I need? (and can actually use, [versus 22 feet of it:rolleyes:])

TIA

If you live near a big city try calling some of the spring shops.I needed 1 3/4 by 1/4 and didn't need 22 feet. found a 6 foot section in the back of one of these shops and saved freight to.

Have called every-place in New Mexico that handles steel... nothing.
A whole state, no shops have any 5160... is it me, or is that insane?

Still need any suggestions of someplace online that might have it int he size I need... :)

I also get 5160 from a local shop that makes automotive springs. They sell it to me by the pound, all sizes cost the same. Do you know what places like this in your area use instead of 5160?

*Feels dumb...*
Duh... I never thought about anyone who made 'em, I just called all the shops that claim to stock "Spring steels" with no luck... and a couple places that sell already made springs... never thought to look under manufacturers. :o

Thats what doing school first in the day, beofre knife making does to ya... burns brain cells. ;)

Dunno if there will be any... but there's a chance... more calls to make tomorrow.

I found a local auto spring shop that had a ton of it lying around the back lot. I pay a whopping .50 a foot for 2X.25" raw stock. They also give me all the already hardened scrap that I want.
Check around your area. Somebody had to do truck and auto leaf spring rebuilds.

Call Jeff Carlisle at Swain spring in Montana. 1-800-378-1246. I talked to him today and they have what you are looking for.

I had the same question before, so I looked around at a few online places. Mainly (I think) I tried Admiral Steel, Jantz Supply, Koval Knives, and Texas Knife I emailed Admirals Steel I'm pretty sure but you can try the different places too. The thing that got me interested is I would like to make some short swords and need the longer, wider steel so if anyone knows of any other sites or places to look for for this kind of steel than let us know okay.
