Where to Find a Signal Flare?

Amongst my many multi and single purpose kits, I've considered adding a signal flare or two. However, I can't seem to find anywhere I might buy one. I read an account of a modified roman candle but would rather have something made expressly for the purpose of signaling. Anyone have an idea where they can be found?

yo! I have these "candle" flares i bought locally, about 6" tall x 2" round with a 1" wide wick......I have never lit one yet (haven't needed to) but apparently they burn slowly like a candle with the intensity of a road flare. If you dont mind, i need to go to the GF's to grab her camera....maybe Thurs i'll ight one one up and snap pics.

Try an auto parts store..emergency road flares? A higher end mountianeering type store might be good bet too. The type that are launched(life raft supplies) are bought at dept stores here..Yalls laws might be a bit different concerning the legality of them.

Thanks for the rapid responses! I should have been more specific in my original post. I'm looking for the projectile type. One that shoots into the air. Can't find em. The road flares I have already :D

I would still like to see what you've got there though!

I believe the (aerial) flares the OP is talking about are considered to be US Coast Guard signal devices and (I think) are legal just about everywhere.

Edit-
Looks like the Orion skyblazer flares might be just what you are looking for. They shoot up to 450ft and do not need a separate launcher, it is a self contained package.

Thanks for the backup Spyder..This being the internet I'd hate to tell a freind "do this or that" and have em get busted for it. Here we're allowed a smallish fixed blade unconcealed in public..if I went to Esavs local (NY) I'd wind up in the hoosegow..double 4 time!!

Thanks for the recommendations! Those marine flares look bulky but will do the job. I think I may have an issue though. I live in California and EVERYTHING is illegal here. I was re-reading a Lofty Wiseman book and looking at one of the flares he suggests. It looks like a single unit with 6-8 holes in it, each of which I assume can deploy it's own small flare. Anybody know what this is?

Try www.bestglide.com. They have a pretty good selection of singal flares, smoke flares and other signaling items. You will have to pay a HEFTY haz-mat shipping fee though. You have to call and order those items over the phone so they can quote you the charges.

I used to keep one of these in the pocket of my survival suit. I had an Olin 12gauge flare gun and bandolier in the duffel with the suit. Thankfully I only have had to put the suit on once and never had to use the flares.

The Orions are compact about the size of a Magnum permanant marker. They have a pretty good safety on them. Mine never discharged accidentally and was bumped around a lot. I did find it extended once.

If you are looking for compact I would say that the Orion is the way to go.

Pete

Anyone have any luck finding them on the shelf anywhere in California? I think I'm S.O.L. :(
