It's pretty cool. A little rough on production, but if you've made some folders, particularly a lockback, you'll get it. You may need to email Chris about the primary tool he uses, called a broach cutter or breech cutter or something like that. This is what's used for the recessed area the spring fits into in the blade and bolster, but I couldn't find ont in MSC, so maybe he can clue you into where to get it. You pretty much need a mill for this one.
Thanks for the plug Chiro. The only source that I know of for the rotobroach cutter is from Rade Hawkins. He does not have them listed on his website, so you will have to contact him directly. His contact info is on his website at http://www.radehawkins.com/. The video come with a materials list where I list all of the materials and tools needed, and where I purchased them. There are really only two parts that I use my little milling machine for other than using it as a drill. The first time is when I cut the lock-notch in the blade. This can actually be done with a file if you do not have a milling machine. Even with the milling machine I usually have to do my final adjustments to this notch with a file. The second place I use the mill is for cutting a small slit for the straight end of the spring to fit into. This can be done with a dremil tool if you do not have a mill. The first two autos I made were made without a mill. By the way, the rotobroach it a tool that fits into your drill press. Thanks -chris
I highly recommend Chris's video. It is about the only info out there on how to make scale release autos. The video will get you thinking and with a bit of trial and error you can apply the same concepts shown in the video to other types of autos, i.e, a bolster release.
