Hi Guys,

I want to buy an inexpensive strop or make on. I really don't want to use cardboard. I would prefer leather. All my knives are of modern steel so I also need a compound to charge it with. Which would be best and where can I purchase the strop.

Thanks in advance,
beakman

Take a look at http://www.pinewoodforge.com/strop.html You can obtain a strop elsewhere on the Pinewood Forge site. While you're there look around. If you have any interest in handmade wood spoons this may be an eye opener.

An alternative strop set-up is to use one micron or six micron diamond paste applied sparingly on the surface of a piece of MDF. On the other hand, if Del Stubbs' (Pinewood Forge) strop is half as good as his knives it will work just fine.

I just went to a local shoe repair shop and asked for a piece of 8 -9 Oz leather. cost me a dollar. If you have any machine shop supply houses around just ask there for buffing compound.

Tandy Leather has some online too

I ordered some stropping compound from these guys a few weeks back: when I called to find out when my order would ship, the gentleman talked to me for about 15 min and ended up throwing in a couple pieces of scrap leather to use for strops. Very helpful and I'll go back to them for my next stuff.

PS - the 11,000 grit paste he sells is amazing.

I know that there are several strops out there. I have one that was homemade by a former knifemaker in Arkansas. It works great.

I have heard that Handamerican is truly a great company to deal with.

I would make sure that the leather meets the criteria of what a bladesmith would deem suitable for a good strop.

Also here on this Forum there is a section on Razors & Scissors and other miscellaneous cutting tools. I would be that someone on the Razor Forum could tell you of more than one great source for a high quality strop. Good Luck and let us know what you come up with. JD

Is the green Veritas compound that comes with the strop from Lee Valley reccomended?
