Where do you get a good steel for stock removers who heat treat it with there BBQ
like 1084
where can you get like 1/8 or like 3/16 inch thick
for the cheapest including shipping
or just list where you can get a good steel for noobs even if it not the cheapest

don't just say 1084 and new jersey steel baron

I'm pretty sure anyplace you get 1084 it's source will have been Aldo. They do have higher shipping and much slower turn around than most places, but it is what it is. I just ordered 5 48" pieces from him to try to get around the shipping issue. USA Knife maker is the only other source I know of.

theres really know way to get around shipping unless you can get it locally. steel is heavy no matter where you order it from.

With a 12" piece of 1084 from usaknifemaker, which was like 8.50, the total cost with shipping came out to $15 to wisconsin.

If you were to have filled out your profile, and shipping was the issue, I would have offered to combine an order if you were going my way... I've been looking at some 1084 stock too...

This treads' got me thinking, are there any steel suppliers on the west coast... Not to thread jack or anything, but that might be the issue... The OP want's a small quantity but the shipping charge makes him not want to order..

My first reaction was to say get 1084 from Aldo at New Jersey Steel Baron.

Then I saw Chucks post above and remembered that Alpha Knife Supply carries 1080+ in small quantities at bargain prices. He's out of Washington state IIRC. The specs on the 1080+ are real close to 1084. I plan on trying some of the real thin stuff for Kitchen knives in the not to distant future. Even though I live halfway across the country from them, my orders have always arrived in a matter of days after placing an order with them. Good people to do business with.

It's always a good idea to fill out your profile too. This way, if there's a local maker in your area, they may offer help.

Kelly Cupples is out west, sells 1080 in those dimensions, and used to offer free shipping on orders over 100$.

I simply mean most 1084 will come from the same source. There arent many places making it. People buy from aldo and resell. I'm assuming your post means that Alpha Knife supply has it's own independent source?
There are lots of places to buy 1080-1084. It is made by many different mills.

Kelly Cupples is where I send knifemakers who want 1080. His prices are excellent. He is also a friend.
