hi i live in illinois. i am an amature knife smith. i am tired of spending money on charcoal. I would like to know if there is any place near chicago that i can buy coal or coke for relatively cheap. i cannot afford to switch to propane so this is the next best thing. if anyone has a lead let me know. thanx in advance.

Centaur Forge up in Burlington, WI sells blacksmith's coal. Good stuff, but it ain't cheap.

You can also check the steel mills around Gary and Joliet for coke. Some of the places that shut down it was free for the taking.

does that place in WI have a websight. And do you have to watch out for the cops when u take coke from a shut down plant?

Yeap, they have a website. I'd probably Google for "Centaur Forge", were I seeking them.

I'd suppose if you were taking it without permission it would be trespass and theft, so, yes, watching out for the police would be appropriate.

Check with the IL blacksmith association, I know the MO Blacksmith group sales good quality coal and keeps a large supply.
