where can you buy elmax steel in small quantities. i would like it to be thin like under a tenth of an inch or around 3/32 of an inch

The only problem with AKS is they will only sell to commercial accounts - that means you have to have a resale number here in the state of Washington.

Who told you that? I buy from Alpha Knife Supply all the time, they never asked if I was a commercial account. Are you thinking of someplace else?

Anyway call them and ask what they have in stock, and what they expect to get soon. They're very friendly and helpful folks.

AKS does require a resale number for anyone in WA. Outside of WA they don't require it.

When we introduced Elmax at Blade Show three years ago we asked Uddeholm for thinner material. The thinnest stock they had at that time was .140". We've been told Uddeholm has rolled thinner (.100") Elmax and it will be available later this summer. I'm looking forward to getting it.

I have no idea where the you got this idea? We sell materials to lots of knifemakers in Washington State. The only requirement for Washington State residents is a resale permit. This is a new law that was passed in 2010.

Wrong. The State of Washington Department of Revenue requires the resale permit, not us.

Fine. Let's say that the state of Washington requires you to require a resale permit of your WA state customers. The net effect is you require the permit. I really don't care why you require it. The upshot is you won't sell to me.

The net effect and upshot is I obey the law. I am not allowed to sell to a Washington state resident who does not have a resale permit.

Why don't you:
1) Get your business license
2) Apply for the resale permit

Or are you above the law?

Because I'm a hobbyist, Chuck, not a business. I never sell my knives. As a hobbyist I buy from MANY Washington businesses absolutely legally! Yes, they charge me sales tax, and I presume they pay that tax to the state.

Why do I need a resale number to buy from you, Chuck? As a guess, it's because you made a business decision... a decision that put you in the position of requiring resale permits from your in-state customers. That's cool. Business owners make those decisions every day. It's probably even the right business decision for AKS.

Other businesses made decisions that allow them to sell to consumers in-state.

Look, the bottom line is neither you nor I are greatly impacted by your business decision not to sell to consumers in WA. I can buy from other businesses, and you can sell to other customers. I just think it's disingenuous to blame the state and accuse me of illegal activity because of a business decision you made.

dictionary.com defination:
dis·in·gen·u·ous   [dis-in-jen-yoo-uhs]
adjective
lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity; falsely or hypocritically ingenuous; insincere: Her excuse was rather disingenuous.

I am always straight forward with Washington residents. How is that disingenuous?

I asked you if you were above the law. Where did I accuse you of illegal activity?

Okay, Chuck, I've said all I think needs saying. Best wishes to you in your business endeavors.

Wow!

Greg, I feel I need to interject here. Getting a business license and resale permit is a very simple and affordable process. Do that and order away my friend!

To call into question Chuck and Jessica's business practices and decisions is a bit out of line here. States pass silly laws all the time, and we the people have to deal with them one way or another. To hold it against Alpha that they have decided to play by the rules is unfair. You said yourself that there are plenty of other suppliers that will sell to you without the hassle, so why put the onus on Chuck. Address the state if you don't like the laws they've passed. Unless I'm missing something, your directing your frustration in the wrong direction.

Never mind. I'm sticking with my prior statement that I've said all that needs saying.

Please do. Take it to GB&U if you have a beef. Meanwhile if anyone has other sources for Elmax than those already mentioned, let's hear 'em. :)
