Where to get green compound

I usually buy my compound from Tru Grit, but they have been out for a while. I was wondering if you folks have a recommendation on another source for a good green compound--and other colors for that matter--I tend to use only Green, Black and White--I'm also open as to whether that is retarded or not and what ya'll would recommend in terms of compound progression.

Thanks for any advice/input

Pretty much every knife supplier., industrial suppliers ( Grainger, McMaster-Carr, etc.), Amazon, eBay, and most big-box hardware stores sell it. It is just called green chrome polish.

Thanks guys, Stacy is there a specific one that is superior, or are they all the same?

Green chrome compound is pretty much all the same if bought from a reputable supplier. Pop's, K&G, Jantz, TKS, USAKnifemaker, etc. all have sold it to me and my friends over the years, and I can't say there was ever a difference we noticed.

Somewhere in the storage, I think I still have a 20# bag of pure chromium oxide from my lapidary days. IIRC, there is also tin oxide, LindeA and B, and some other oxides and fine SC loose grits. If I didn't donate the whole batch to a local rock club with some old machinery about 10 years back, I may try to make my own polish sticks with it :)

I had a 50# bag of optical grade cerium oxide ( bought when I purchases all of a vintage optician shop's equipment in an estate sale) and found out what it costs today, so I sold it to a glass polisher. That stuff is now over $30 a pound. IIRC, I paid $500 for the whole shop of equipment and supplies.

I got a decent sized bar of green compound from my local sears hardware a while back. They also had a kit with 5 or 6 different tubes of compound, each with a varying degree of agressiveness/polishing effectiveness. It including a tube of green as well. I believe they were both branded under the craftsman name, but I could be remembering incorrectly.

As most people said, pretty much all the knife suppliers should have it and Amazon and eBay. I have ordered from Amazon and they have most of the other colors.

I buy all my buffing supplies from Pop. He's quite knowledgeable about what to use for what, and can tell you which buff's etc to use for materials and processes, along with compounds, and has them all, good quality and prices as usual.

Hey Stacy, what's a good source for loose SC grit?

Most any lapidary supplier sells it. Also, industrial suppliers like McMaster-Carr may have it for grinding and lapping metal things. EBay is probably the cheapest source today. Just search "tumbling grit silicon carbide". It runs about $3 a pound

I buy at our local flavor of home depot, its usually in the ceramic tiles or construction section as its also used to tint the plaster, if its green powder and in that section is almost for sure its powdered chrome oxide.

I wonder how to mix it to make a bar of it.

Yes.

Pablo,
You have to experiment and mix a wax or fat with some sort of carrier material. IIRC, many of the polishing compounds are tallow and fine aluminum oxide with the chrome oxide added. Some of the cheap Chinese polishes are cut with fullers clay. I remember a recipe with beeswax, too.

Her is a MSDS on it:

here is green, 2 pound block http://www.ebay.com/itm/Green-Rouge...hash=item3a80fd0104:m:mYW8YBr7dxc21Cc4GIAsWlg you can sometimes find this a Lowes hardware with a Porter-Cable label. here is a link to a labidary supply store with all sorts of polishes and loose grit. http://www.therockshed.com/grit.html. here is a link that has color to grit chart and also sells the stuff http://www.pjtool.com/jewelers-rouge-chart/
unless polishing by hand with a rag, wear a respirator as this stuff is real nasty if you get it in your lungs.

Good intel folks, I greatly appreciate it--sometimes good stuff comes from an old stand by vendor being out of something.

Thanks folks!!!
