Unfortunately, Peters' only does oil hardening steels up to 20". Is there someplace as good where we could get a 38" piece done?

Also, to satisfy curiosity: no, it is not a sword. Its a polearm :D

Well, I haven't made it yet, as I need to know if I can get it heat treated before I start.

This one will be a naginata blade.

5160 I'd suggest just doing yourself. If you don't have the equipment, I'm sure someone here would be willing to do it for you. Hell, I will. I'll slap together a charcoal forge big enough to normalize and quench from and temper with a torch. My quench tank is tall enough I think.

I think a few sword makers have used Pacific Metallurgical for HT, but I would fully expect to get killed on the price for a single piece.

Ah. I was hoping for someone with Brad Stallsmith's level of experience in getting a tough 5160, but with the equipment to do longer oil-hardened blades.

If all I can hope for is just a normal forge heat and oil quench, I know people who can do that already.

Ok I remember now that you posted asking about Peter's HT on 5160 before.

All I'm going to say is, it's 5160. It's about as simple an HT as it gets, and it's tough by nature, if you want control over that toughness, selective tempering, which I offered to do, will allow that. :P

Any decent maker should be able to handle your needs in that regard, but the size is going to be an issue for most. Good luck.
