where to get heat treat oven?

This is the second post I've asked about heat treat ovens, I'm finaly ready, and can afford one.

It seems the evenheat with the rampmaster is the most popular, what about the controlls on the paragon?

I realy want easy and accurate controls, and some steels seem to take a complicated heat treat, like ATS-34 and CPM 154. Need controls that someone who can't program there VCR can figure out.

Also whats the best place to buy one?

Thanks

I have used an Evenheat for many years and suggest that if getting one that you get the Rampmaster controls (worth the money). My only exposure to the Paragon is on a friends oven. I must say that I liked the oven construction of the Paragon better. Much more sturdily built and the door lifted up rather than swinging right to left which I preferred.

I didn't like the controls on his on his Paragon as well as my Evenheat but they may have controls on other models that would have been better for complex knife H/T. You may want to invest a phone call to their customer service to get a better idea of what is available.

Just looking at them the paragon looks a bit better built, but I don't plan on abusing the oven. My bigest concern is a userfriendy control as I've never used a heat treat oven before. A concern also is how well the oven heats, but I dought there's much differance between them.

I'll do a little more reading, I've about settled on the evenheat with rampmaster controls, but if I could get the same or similar controls on the paragon I'd probably go for it instead.

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will, As built the paragon is easier to program and use and the outside stays alooooott cooler when it is at heat. But I talked with Mike Kelly from even heat at leangth and there are some things that can be done. There is supposed to be a Rampmaster comtroller that has preset hardening and tempering cycles that are able to be edited by the user. I have also had them build an over that had an extra bit of kaowool wrapped around the outside of the bricks just before the stainless shell was put on which significantly reduced the temperature of the outside while the oven was at temp. If I were to order a evenheat I would talk to Mike Kelly and tell him what I wanted and who I was ordering the oven from then have the person ordering the oven tell even heat that they were ordering the oven for you and to please include the revision that you had talked to Mike Kelly about. When you talk to Mike tell Him that I (Bill Burke ) talked to you about the mods.

Good looking oven Doc, unfortunatly time is something I don't have a lot of at present. I work overseas 28 on and 28 off. Never seems to be enough hours in the day.

Bruce, your saying the paragon is easier to program than the rampmaster? I played around with a simulator at the paragon site, looks like I could maybe figure it out. As long as I can store recipies on it it shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks,

Will

I have an Evenheat with the Rampmaster controller. It took me about 2 minutes to learn how to program it. It's simple, especially for the steels you mentioned.

I'd order it from Jantz or Tim Zowada.

with both ovens setting side by side the paragon is easier with fewer key strokes to program. I am not saying the rampmaster is hard but it is harder than the paragon. However if the evenheat comes with the new pre programmed controller then I withdraw my statement.

Thanks, it's one of those decisions I agonize over till I just say screw it and buy the thing.(read I'm cheap!)

Well I just said screw it and ordered a paragon from Jantze, there 24" deep model. Hope it works as good as I think it will. Now I just need to figure out a good recipie for cpm 154.:D
