I think that is what they called, it is a small magnifying type tool that they hold in there eye, while working on jewelry, checking diamonds, etc. I just thought it would help me out with knife sharpening, to be able to see the edges better. Anyone know of a good quality one, and where to buy?, any help would be appreciated, thanks..

I got mine at a tool store that carried all kinds of odds and ends.

However, I recommend something a bit different! Go to Radio Shack and get their 60-100 lighted microscope. I think it is around $9 US. it lights up and you can zoom in and really have a good look at edges! It is smaller than a deck of cards.

I use a 4x lighted magnifying glass that I got at a Rexall Drugstore. I think this magnitude gives you the best power for checking the edge of a knife when sharpening.

jeepin and John,

my pleasure to help out! The unit is a lot of fun to play with. I love looking at G-10, as you can see all of the glass strands that make up the weave! Way cool.

However, I must admit that the Radioshack pocket microscope isn't the coolest optical knife gadget out there. Some forumites (JEALOUSY SETS IN HERE) have "normal" microscopes that they use for looking at knife edges! Buy would I like one of those! Unless I find one on the street, I'll have to settle with my Radio Shack scope :) Maybe I should check the hospital's dumpsters... :)

I use an 8X lupe designed for looking at photo negatives (Agfa I believe, the brand marking has worn over the years), available at photographic shops. I also have a linen tester a bit less powerfull that I like, forgot where I got that one but I´ve seen them around, this one is nice because it folds compact, yet stands up for use with a prefocused base.

I´d like to try the Radio Shack microscope, but haven´t found it in their stores in Mexico.

Edited to correct on my mental blindness, my 8X lupe is clearly marked "AGFA".
