Anyone know a "reliable" AND "cheap" place to get the lord of the rings sword - andursil. This the limited edition sword thats featured in the upcoming return of the king movie. Thanks a bunch

Are you talking about Narsil, shattered in the battle at the plains of Mount Doom and used to cut the One Ring off of Sauron's hand, or Anduril, the sword reforged from the shards of Narsil? They are both made in decorator (wall-hanger) form by United Cutlery. By this, I mean that they have stainless steel blades and are not really fit for use as real swords. But they are relatively expensive for what you get. That is a result of the cost to UC of the lisence to make them, and UC is the ONLY lisence-holder, so they have a bit of a monopoly on them. There are others, but they are, by and large, cheap POS items from Pakistan, India, and China that you would not want to give houseroom to, or at least most of us would not. It is a case of getting what you pay for. If you want an exact replica of the movie sword, you are stuck with United Cutlery's products, which are available from many dealers on the web, just go to a search engine and enter "LOTR Swords". You will get all kinds of hits.

If you want a real sword, however, I suggest that you go over to SwordForum.com and browse around their General Forum and their Film Swords and Sword Films Forum for a bit and you will find numerous entries about people who have looked for real swords that are close to the ones in the film.

The Nobel Collection also makes a few LOTR swords. http://www.noblecollection.com/catalog/catalog.cfm?catid=17 These cost more than the ones by United and I guess they might be better quality wall hangers but they still are wall hangers. Wall hangers are ok for decoration IMO as long as the owner has no intention of using it as a sword. I've not seen this with LOTR but I have seen many people and catalogs selling wall hangers as real swords.

This looks like a nice sword that would fit right in with the LOTR: http://www.albionarmorers.com/swords/albion/medieval/crecy.htm Does anyone have any experience with this company?

Practically everything albion produces is first rate. I have read hundreds and hundreds of posative rfeviews and no negative ones that were not sorted by albion asap. Albion is one of the finest companies out there and the people are fine fine people as well. I have tyet to be a customer of theirs but feel that its my duty as a sword collector to someday be one.

If you read the appropriate threads over in SwordForums, you will see that at least Del Tin and Albion, both, and I believe Angus Trim as well, make swords that closely resemble various LOTR swords and are very much real user swords. Note, however, that the Del Tin swords do not come sharpened and that the other two makers do provide them sharp. If you wish to spar with either an Albion or Atrim model, you should specify that you want it for that purpose and that it not be sharpened. If you want to cut with a Del Tin, you will have to find someone to sharpen it for you or you will need to sharen it yourself, an task not to be undertaken lightly. There are cutlers out there who will modify the hilts and other furniture on blades to meet a customer's desires, but they charge for this. Christian Fletcher is one of these, I believe. See http://www.christianfletcher.com/

Thanks for all the info guys. I ended up finding the sword on ebay. There's a bunch of them on there. Average price is like 250 shipped. The sword is for a friend on mine who is a huge LOTR fan. It'll just be a wall hanger so...

Just as a by the by Hugh I think Angus Trim is the only maker that makes "Inspired by the movie" pieces of those you mentioned. As far as I know Albion isn't doing anything along those lines at all. Del Tin had an Orcrist and a Glamdring but those were extant long before the movies were ever thought of and bare no resemblance to the movie swords at all. There is a guy named John Lumdemo that is making basically exact replicas of the movie swords. His outfit is called Odinblades. Perhaps his have enough difference to avoid copyrighting issues I don't know.

Hey, Triton, I didn't mean to imply that Del Tin or Albion made swords "inspired" by the films, only tht they made "swords that closely resemble various LOTR swords and are very much real user swords". By "Closely resemble", I meant just that. That they look like them in various ways, which they do.

BTW, I posted this over in the "Sword Movies & Movie Swords" Forum at SwordForum.com and it might interest folks here:

I just picked up a new book entitled The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare, by Chris Hawken Smith (Chris Smith)
List Price: $29.95, Barnes & Noble Price: $17.97, and Barnes & Noble Member Price: $17.07

This is the answer for all of you who have been asking where to find pics of the various weapons being used in the LOTR films. This book has them in abundance, the swords, the daggers, the lances/ spears/pikes, the armors, the helmets, and the tactics of the various contingents comprising the various armies of Man, of Elves, of Dwarves, of Orcs and Uruk-Hais and mountain trolls, as well as the Easterlings fighting for the Dark Lord Sauron.

With sketches, colored illustrations, and loads of photographs, the book is the answer to the prayer of anyone wanting to look up a specific weapon or tactic and see who was using it. I certainly am enjoying it.
N.B. Initially posted in haste so I had to correct numerous typos.

I'm sorry Hugh I misunderstood I guess. Were you talking about blade types and the like?

Hey, Russ, I guess that I should have said what I was getting at in the first place, that there are similar swords, made by others which can be modified to look very much like several of the LOTR swords. All it takes is a bit of skill with your hands or a good cutler and a good scabbard/belt maker (hint :D )

Lol thanks Hugh... The nice thing about the swords in this movie are that with the exception of that long leafblade Glamdring and those elven falx thingies a lot of the weaponry toted about by the main characters isn't to far off from historical originals. As such like you say it isn't terribly difficult to get a historical reproduction and modify it to fit your LOTR taste. Also, no just in case anyone is wondering I STILL have not been to see the latest movie.
