hey guys i'm heading stateside again for a few months and just wanted some recommendations in Dallas where to go to buy good quality knives? I want to find some traditional fixed blades (preferably antler handle) while I'm at my brother in laws. I'm spending a week in TX I think so any recommendations for where to shop, and even good attractions is welcome :)

cheers guys!

West End Marketplace is an interesting place for bars and restaurants.

If you get over to Ft. Worth, check out the Stockyards and go downtown to see the courthouse that was in Walker, Texas Ranger! (we got married in that Tarrant County courthouse!)

I would recommend doing a google search for knife shows in Dallas, and Fort Worth too.
The gun shows also have knife makers attending.

House of Blades on NW Loop 820.

Walked out of there 4 years ago with 6 Spyderkeys for $65 each. They have a large collection of older fine manufactured blades - many with aftermarket handle material like you mentioned.

The Spirit of Steel show in Grapevine near the Bass Pro Shop has been postponed. No word on reschedule. Good local show when they have it.

Trail Dust Steakhouse in Arlington is a great place for beef....and there's Rudy's Country Store and Barbeque (billed as the worst barbeque in Texas) on the Dallas Parkway in Frisco.

Nix on the Cowboys game until the presence and the fetid lingering stench of Jerry Jones are but a distant disgusting memory. He and Al Davis have a date as eternal dance partners in the 7th level of football ownership hell for their sins.

cheers for that java, i went to house of blades website and jeeze it sucks lol...says they have no stock so i'm guessing they dont utilise their website too much for buisness, but it does say they sell handmade one offs and stuff too which is appealing. I'll try and check out that steakhouse, I love having a decent thickness steak or a well prepped rack of ribs so will have to see. :D As for knife shows i'm only in TX a week, right after thanksgiving so i doubt anything will be on otherwise i'd arrange to goto some stuff.

Thanks guys for the help...still open for any and all recommendations, will write them down and then see how i go for time.

+1 on that website.

It is no reflection on the store itself. You may have to comb through all the off-name stuff they sell and you can haggle a bit on the price. The Spyderkeys ranged in MSRP from 60.95 to 89.95 but they came down when I offered to buy their entire stock. Still a bargain to this day. I recall they had plenty of CoPilots and Enduras in multiple after market scales along with the antler handled knives of other brands. I also picked up a complete SE and PE blade selection of the PRCA edition Spydercos - including the Q - at a ridiculous price.

Hava a safe trip and happy hunting.

Thanks mate, cant wait to leave...pity this is only a 2 month trip, applying for greencard when i get back :D

Roy's Hardware over on Singleton is worth checking out, but more for the guns and hunting equipment than that knives. They had a HUGE selection of guns when I was there earlier this year. Knife selection was somewhat limited and $$$ though. Also, not the best neighborhood anymore, so be mindful of that.

I know it sounds a bit odd to recommend you visit a grocery store, but check out Central Market while you are there if you get the munchies. Lots of wonderful stuff, normally lots of good free samples, killer bakery and produce, and very respectable deli. Nobody in Baton Rouge makes fresh tortillas, so every time I go to Dallas or Houston I buy bags for them from Central Market to bring back.

If you have much interest in history, you should take a visit to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and the plaza, itself.

There's no substitute for seeing the plaza in person.

thanks alot, i'm a history buff so will definately check that out...great help guys, I leave in 8 days so i'm excited. I hate it when I have to leave the country I now call home, last time I have to though :)

oh and if you have any advice on legal carrying there i'm up for it...I've always carried in the states but I dont want to get in trouble screwing up my visa application, I saw for TX is around 5" for legal and 3.5" for KS legal carry (two states i'll be in).

Watch that 5" around Dallas. It also varies city-to-city.

DFW also has two of the larger Bass Pro Shops outdoor stores in Garland and Grapevine. Cool stores for a chain store.

Have a great trip and even though it ain't up to XXXX, Tooheys, Coopers, or Sheaf Stout, have a couple of Shiners and Ziggenbachs for me.

will do with the 5" carry...prolly easy to call local PD and ask them what the city laws are, i normally dont worry too much about legal carry length, but when i've got alot at stake i dont wanna risk it...my wife would kill me if i screwed my visa application up over a knife lol.

I'm not really an aussie beer guy ;) more of a spirits guy...I will miss bundaberg rum once i get to the US though. Thanks alot mate.
