As far as very near Chicago... Blackwell(Silver Lake), Des Plaines Conservation Area (I-55 @ Kankakee River), Warren Dunes (Michigan), Indiana Dunes (Indiana), or my favorite local desitnation........ (for you train it to) Lemont/Lockport and find a place. Lots of unused area down there to do a little camping. Note that there are no campgrounds there, your making your own discreetly.

When I lived in Chicago, I did most of my camping in northern WI/MI/MN, or out in the eastern or western mountains. I think there are at least a few options, though.
  • You can take the South Shore Commuter train from Chicago to north eastern Indian, and I believe at least one stop is accessable to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Just be careful where you get off, as it also stops in some very undesirable neighborhoods.
  • You can also take the Metra commuter train as far north as Racine WI. Not sure what the camping ops are around there, but it might be worth checking out.
  • I know you can reach Glacier National Park by Amtrak train from Chicago, but that's quite a trip (and expensive too).
  • You used to be able to take Amtrak south to SIU, which is close to some camping opportunities in southern IL, although I am not sure how close the train station might be to any of them.
Hope that helps at least some!

i think the amtrak will take you up to wasua or somewhere up noth in wi. tons of camping up there. also look up the ice age trail it runs all over the state of wi. there has got to be a section by a train or bus station.
