I'm trying to think of something to keep all my knives in. I don't want one of those knife rolls or a small case. I want something thats about 5' high and can have a lock on it. Also i want it to be strong

Any ideas?

i also wanna hear where you guys and gals keep all your knives

I havent a huge collection or anything, so I keep most of mine in my backpack, (hey at least then I have them ;) ) the small number of old stuff I dont use I keep in a .50 cal ammo box.
It sounds to me like you need a safe, or one of those locking tool storage cabinets.

i want something that doesn't look like i have something to hide though. just something like a wood cabinet with some hooks.

Mainly though i wanna hear where other people keep them

In a steamer trunk. It's not gun-safe secure, but it does have a lock and is stong enough to keep out the curious/nosey.

I am working on a design (in my head) for a wooden cabinet. I'm also thinking about the practicality and aesthetics of using stackable Craftsman tool chests.

I bought a cloth knife pouch that does NOT roll up, and has individual slots for my folders. And I use a tool box to keep others in.

Something like that?

That doesn't appear to be able to hold very much...probably
he's looking for something larger :D

Chuck,

Ya gotta show 'em the Tomway too!

When I started as a kid they were in my top dresser drawer. A cigar box in the back of my closet held them when I was at Emory. The knife rolls came next. Then a Gershner (still use it for supplies, sheaths, records.) I started looking around the house about 5 years ago and although I live in a safe neighborhood, it was a good decision to get a large safe, but my favorite is a Tomway box that holds 29 folders/smaller fixed blades. I am a little jaded since the owner of Tomway (Calvin Cooledge :D ) lives a couple of miles from me and I have known him long before he purchased the company.

I also have a few knives on display (glassed cases) around the house and a reproduction of a old timey pharmacy bookshelf (Costco special) that holds the knives I use.

Here is the Tomway off of their site.

Those Tomways look pretty nice, and they're a real bargain considering they cost just under ONE MILLION DOLLARS each. The old tool chest just got a new lease on life! :D

To outta sight.
I like to look at my knives!
Watch the light glint off that freshly sharpened edge.
I want an open case.
Any ideas?

a while back i built myself a coffee table with a glass top that can be lifted. it functions as both a display case for my knives as well as a great coffee table, and they are in such a place that they always get noticed.
you can either build one yourself (the concept is quite straightforward and simple), or modify an existing coffee table. there are many wood coffee tables with glass tops (you can find them at yard sales, etc), you can build a shallow case underneath the glass and line it with velvet or whatever material floats your boat, refinish it however you like, and you have yourself a nice little display case. if you have too many knives for the table then build another case for the wall that matches - looks very coordinated :)

id take a photo of the thing but it is already at my new place (moving back to Windsor on sept 1).

cheers,

In the past I used a Gerstner but it got too cramped, so here's what I made.

I call it the EDC - Every Day Cabinet. Kind of a big jewelry box that houses knives, carry guns and other man-toys.

Cpirtle,

The cabinet in my mind is sort of like your's, so I have some questions for you if you have a moment. I'm thinking the top section will be a wood armiour-type deal - open it to expose large display area for knives with stands, and inside the doors would be thin display shelves. The center section would be drawers like your's. The bottom section would be cabinet-type storage like your's, for storing boxes, sheaths, etc.

How do you keep the knives from sliding around every time you open or close the drawers? I'm thinking my drawers would need dividers of some sort.

What are the dimensions of your cabinet? I'm thinking mine will be 30-36 inches wide, 24-30 inches deep, and 6' tall.

Was it hard to build? I'm not much of a carpenter, but I have a good selection of woodworking tools.

Does your cabinet have a lock of some sort?

-Bob
