So I am a few weeks into use with my Edge Pro Apex 3 kit. I just have to say, wow. I have been more than thrilled with the results, and don't know why I didn't do this years ago. I got my Benchmade 710 from a dull, uneven factory edge to a shiny, even edge that can whittle hair (never been able to do that before!) It is mostly thanks to this forum that I have gained my small amount of knowledge, so thanks everyone! I am finding myself a bit obsessed with the mirror edge aspect of it all now... so I have the 1000 grit EP stone, and Spyderco UF stones. Ideally I would buy all the stones and strops I could, but being on a budget, what are the next best purchases to get that big shine? I like the idea of strops that fit right on the Edge Pro. How high in grits do I need for a true mirror edge, and how big of grit jumps can I make before they stop being effective? Thanks so much!

a true mirror edge
Depends on what you look at the bevel with; naked eye or magnification. There is almost no limit.
For the best mirror find a system Edge Pro, Shapton etc and get the whole progression of grits. Don't skip and you will have the best MIRROR.

You may not have the best edge at that point and the ultra high level of sharpness at that level goes away the first time you cut anything with grit in it like cardboard or dirty string or rope.

I don't care for strops and do all my "mirror" sharpening strictly on stones.
Which stones ?
Depends on the steel alloy THAT YOU have.

Ah I love this thread. Such eye candy. Do you like the stones or polishing tapes better?

I almost never use tapes. The only time was fooling around using silicon oxide (wet or dry paper) on a glass plate made for the Edge Pro. I was attempting to sharpen a Zironium (ceramic) blade. I had moderate success. Other wise . . . as I said . . . strictly stones. 8,000 or 15,000 is sweet enough for me.
