Can anyone recommend an online store to buy the Howlin Rat? After reading about it on this Forum I have to have it.

That is the howling rat little mischief, their latest version and the only one you can actually buy new.

And what does "sterile" mean? Is there no logo on the knife then? Why on earth not? And what is LM, little mischief? What's the difference?

Well, there is lots of information about this, and all other swamprat knives in the swamprat forum on this very site!

Sterile does mean that there is no logo or marking of any kind on the knife. I am not sure exactly why they dont mark their production models, cost, or perhaps its simply because it would be extraneous. The LM is the designator chosen to represent this particular iteration of the Howling rat. Look around some and you will find that it has changed over the years. Choil size, handle material, etc are different.

The Mischief is a series of knives in current and planned production; there's a 6 inch, 7 inch, and 9 inch version (but I think only the 6 inch has been produced yet). The smaller knives are then marked as "Little Mischief" in addition to their specific name, and the current Swamp Rat incarnations all have micarta handles.

The old Howlers that aren't marked "LM" have Resiprene-C (rubber-like) handles. If you fancy a rubber handle, you can look to Swamp Rat's sister company at http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ . They use the same rubber handles as the old Swamp Rats on a different steel, but to my knowledge they haven't made a Howler yet. I'm guessing they'll make one some time this year though.

I'll second sputnick's recommendation to visit to the Swamp Rat manufacturers forum. Eric Isaacson can probably answer any question you may have regarding the Howling Rats.

Based on what I've read, there have been 3 generations of Howling Rats. The first two generations had the Res-C handles, the third generation (current knife) has the micarta handle.

I don't know that I've cracked the code on SRKW logos but it appears that whenever a new knife model or significant change to a knife model is introduced it usually has the logo. Subsequent releases of the identical knife typically don't have logos. Models which are military overruns may or may not have logos. And exceptions abound. Best to ask Eric, LOL :D

Enjoy your HRLM..it's a great knife. Order a sheath if they have them in stock.
