Where to search for anvil?

Can you folks give me some starting points to buy a large anvil?

Thanks,

Got mine at a trading post type of store. Just let everyone you know that you're looking for one. Well established family farms would also be good places to inquire at. Amazing what you can find with this method. Once people know you blacksmith they get all excited and look for things for you. Just be sure and check it to make sure it wasn't through a fire and lost it's temper. You test them by holding a 1/2" or so ballbearing about 18" above the anvil face. Drop it and it should bounce back to your hand.

Check the ABANA site and look for a chapter near you. Members often sell or trade stock at meetings, you might run into a knifemaker, and sure will learn something about forging. I went for a drive-around a while back spotted 8 anvils, no one was interested in selling. One old man told me he might need his, he looked as though if he didn't use it in the next week he was not going to get the chance. Maybe you'll get lucky. Also try ad in the paper.

A LARGE anvil? let's see...
Most of the good (read old)anvils were turned in during the scrap drives of WWII. The last acquisition I saw was a local 'smith that went to Germany and bought a 40-stone something forged anvil. I don't think they even make them that big anymore...that's something over 600lbs. I offered to indenture myself to get it!

For most work, a smaller anvil of 65-150lbs will suffice. Larger anvils work better.

Your choices; forged-rings like a bell when tapped with a hammer-best, faced-goes "tink" when tapped with a hammer-usable for the hobbiest, cast iron-goes thud when tapped with a hammer-door stop.

Good luck! I don't know any 'smiths that are NOT looking for an anvil.
